It is an evo 8, only happens under load at about 2500-3000 rpm. Car drives fine, no hiccups or engine lights.

Is this a built motor?
Do you still have balance shafts?
I would try to isolate the noise. You and pull accessory belts to eliminate some rotational noise.
What about dual valve springs? What cams?
