New member with a blown engine :(

I'll admit I've read these forums for a while, but never made an account to post. I've learned a lot just by reading, so thank you.

Now I have an issue with my 2003 Evo 8. I had it with a mechanic friend of mine for repair to an exhaust leak and a new alternator, and during the test drive, I believe he said it threw a rod (or maybe a piston?) through the block and it's now cracked. He says I need a new engine.

Apparently, an Evo 8 engine is a pain to locate at anywhere under $5,000. And even at that I'm having trouble finding anything at all.

I love this car. I don't want to give it up. I'm emotionally attached to it and clearly can't be objective so my questions are a) is this something worth fixing? And b) does anyone know where I can find an engine for maybe closer to $2000-3000? Or is that just out of the question?

So when is a test ride necessary for an alternator swap and exhaust leak? Im gonna say never!

Doesnt sound like stuff friends do, aounds more like stuff a jerkoff would do!

Welcome aboard & thanks for becoming a member here on the EvOM boards

Sorry to hear of the issue. We certainly have had members to throw rods & break the iron block. Ive not had to source a block at this point but
maybe the local classifieds or consider a short block from the following suppliers:
  • MAP
  • Buschur
  • English racing
  • STM
  • Jackson Auto Machine

Sounds like you threw a rod. Not cool. If rod broke, what else got damaged? Entire engine (long block) can run you $3500, but it could need a rebuild. If head is good, then you could get lucky finding a good bottom end (short block) for $1500. But it could also need a rebuild.
Add pictures of damage and pictures of head when it comes off and we'll know more. You should plan on spending $5000 to fix.

+1

Something tells me that was more than just a test drive.

Yeh it's lucky you have a mechanic friend who has taken it upon himself to test drive your car when it threw a rod, I am thinking he is going to give you a great cost price to replace the block at his workshop, maybe store the car their until its fixed, you can drop in and give him a hand too he might even be able to help you source your block cause he is such a great mate

I wondered if it was more of a test race. But As is probably obvious, I don't know my way around an engine so there's no way for me to know for sure what happened, so that's why I'm asking you guys!. Thanks for all the information so far

I'm going to have someone else drop the engine in for me, I just need to find one. He's coming today to look at it so I'll take some photos for you guys to see.

2006EvoIXer, do you have contact information for Justin Short?

Sorry, I'm on and off even on my day off. Best to find a good engine and drop in and get retune. Check your oil cooler and lines for metal debris. And turbo oil passages before assembling with new engine.
