Mivec intake cam timing help!

Good Morning Evo M. In short I need help with timing my recently rebuilt engine (I searched the issue but didn't see anything, I might be blind though) Before I took engine apart I made marks on the cams as to how they go back in (the white marks on shaft translate to the cam dowels straight up, 12 o'clock). I had to disassemble the intake cam gear due to metal shavings though out the motor. I vaguely remember people saying to prime the oil pump to fill empty cam gear, my oil pump (dry sump) is currently getting rebuilt so I can't prime.

So when I set the intake cam to valve cover the cam itself is off (see white marks on cam).

Is there anyway to set the intake cam when it is de pressurized?

Funny thing is I did the timing about 5 years ago and I didn't struggle not sure what the hell I am missing or forgot.

Thank you for any info!!!! Tim

you have to set the cam wheels in correct position and not worry about the cam position. Check that the sensor wheel on the other side of cam is correctly positioned and mivec will take care of cam timing on the intake..

Yes, mivec cam can rotate inside that 4 thick black plastic bulges in center. Oil controls the cam's advancement through ports connected to the mivec solenoid.

Without oil pressure, the Mivec gear locks into place. So as long as you reassembled it correctly, you're fine.

That sounds quite right. I have no experience with the MIVEC system but do know that many manufacturers use a locking device or a spring-loaded cam gear to ensure the cam is in a base position for restart. As long as you are sure your cam gear was reassembled correctly and hit your timing marks there’s not much left for you to do!
Some older Audi engines that used adjustable intake cam gears used speacial tools to move the camshaft to a base position before tightening the cam gear sprocket, but those were held in time with frictional forces from the cam sprocket bolt, not a keyed sprocket.

To confirm with above: You have the teeth set. That's all that matters. The cam will set itself once there is oil pressure.

Locks into place? It will lock full left or full right (play in-between) It lines up with valve cover upon full lock when locked left.

Just did timing belt and everything lines up.

The position of the cam doesn't matter. Only the cam moves, not the gear. Line the teeth of the gear up to the valve cover. The cam will be advanced or retarded a few degress; it doesn't mater. It will go to the correct place once oil pressure comes up.

When there is no oil pressure, the Mivec Gear has an internal lock that locks it in place. It shouldn't move independent of he can unless it has oil pressure.
