Yeah, it starts at 2k RPM, but unfortunately the higher you rev it, the louder the chatter is. So cruising on the highway at about 70-80MPH is pretty bad.

I've had other people ask what that pad was after it fell out from under the dash. I figure most of these cars have been pretty well molested by now. But your sound pad is there where it should be.

Could this possibly be the MIVEC system tuned for the previous BC camshaft setup? When swapping to the Evo 9 OEM Camshafts, it's throwing something off causing this noise? I'm really wanting to get this car dialed in, but want to figure this noise out first before it's tuned.

I have no help with that question - I drive an 8.

Seriously wish I had just gone with an Evo 8 head at this point. Just doesn't make sense that the car didn't have this ticking noise before.

That’s weird man. Prob going to be something stupid. Does it sound like something vibrating or something rubbing on something? Kind of hard to hear in the video.

To me, it sounds like something is tapping / ticking in the head. But listening to it from the engine bay itself says otherwise. It can only be heard from within the cabin. I had a buddy's shop look at it, and had it on the lift. Couldn't make heads or tails of it, even with someone revving the engine while on the lift diagnosing from below.

I'm convinced my Evo is cursed.

You get underneath the car and shake the exhaust system? Check around the firewall. If you’re feeling groggy pull the dash and see if something in there’s rattling. It’s hard to tell without hearing it in person. Just depends how far you’re willing to go with it. If you’re ever in Tampa I’d like to hear it. Maybe I can make sense of it.

Moving to Miami in June, but that is still a ways from Tampa lol. Should I ever visit the Orlando area for our Disney visits, I'll shoot you a PM. Though I'm really hoping on having this issue fixed by then.

I'm still somewhat convinced on my MIVEC theory, and am considering moving forward with getting a tune in hopes the MIVEC itself is just going wacky.

In the mean time, will be continuing to take the stethoscope to things and listening around. Especially for electrical solenoids and what not.

Starting to think I may be having some valve to piston contact on the drivers side. As I put the stethoscope to the water neck, or even on the lower side of the head which meets the block, I can hear the noise amplified. If this is the case, this would be a huge bummer.. as this head ran perfect on the other Evo. Everything was timed properly.

I would also think that piston to valve contact would make the car run poorly as well.

Edit:

As I start thinking about it though.. say there was valve to piston contact, this should result in the valve being bent, and loss of power over all. Not to mention I'd think the engine sound would be extremely loud from the outside.

Buddy if there was contact you’d know it. Do a compression and leak down test to ease your mind. Also, this is an evo. They are notorious for random *** noises. If you get in my car with solid mm you’d loose it lol. I learned to turn the music up and enjoy the thing. I used to be just like you or worse.

One of the moderators here (as I remember?) had a knocking sound after a shop did a clutch change. Seems they had bent the power steering line behind the transmission and as the motor moved on its mounts it was hitting. I think the most amazing thing about this is that the cause was ever found.

Sadly as I've been driving it, the noise is actually getting louder/worse. I'm about ready to park it and take a break from it for a few months. Going to pull the valve cover off tomorrow to see if anything obvious is present. Otherwise, it's time to throw in the towel for a bit.

Well, you said the other block had the same noise. This would lead me to think it’s not the block. You changed the head and same noise so would make me think it’s not motor related?
