RPM Ticking Noise
Yeah I missed the part about the old mivec gear making noise. Possible. Now I’ll tell you what. My transmission after it heats up in neutral revving you can hear gear rattle loud but I have tq solution mounts. If you press clutch in it stops though that’s why I was asking.

Hey guys, sorry for the lack of reply. It's been a busy weekend. I got the valve-cover off, and that is as far as I got.
The only thing that debunks the MIVEC gear being the issue, is that the sound is not coming from the MIVEC cam gear itself, or even from the timing side. Definitely sounds like it's coming more from the opposite side. Otherwise, a tune with zeroing out the MIVEC would resolve the issue. Just in case the previous tune was for the BC camshafts as opposed to my current OEM Evo 9 Cams Tomorrow I should have some time to try and bleed the lifters around that area. All though, one would think if it was the lifters, you'd be able to hear it pretty well from the outside without the aid of a stethoscope / listening from inside the cab.
Yeah, thing with this is that no matter what you do to the drive-train, it changes nothing. Clutch pushed in, in gear, etc. Still the same. The noise starts happening as soon as the car turns on.
Thanks again for the comments so far.
1. he said the old mivec gear made a 'similar noise but much worse' I assume because it was bad, and they go bad and make noise
2. that indicates the mivec gear has a potential to make noise
3. the internet searches reveal a lot of noisy issues and piston/valve contact related to mivec gear stuff
4. he never tried it without them mivec gear, this seems to be the only thing that isn't OEM going from engine to engine
5. the entire engine is OEM except this one part right?

- Right, the issue basically made a terrible rattle sound under boost. This sound only happened after I had switched the shortblock. It's a pretty common issue, and swapping out the Cam-Gear itself solves the issue. Which it did. The rattle sound underboost that it made is now gone.
- See #1
- This is why I kept asking if anyone has had a similar noise with MIVEC, and maybe it has to do with the intake camshaft itself maybe stuck on a advanced timing? But that wouldn't make sense, as the car has to be a certain RPM for that I'd think.
- My evo 9 comes with MIVEC from factory. It's an OEM feature. Disabling MIVEC requires a bit to properly do. Since I have a brand new MIVEC gear, might as well put it to use.
- Everything is OEM, including the MIVEC Cam Gear itself.
- Yeah, it's a tough one here, but searching around with the stethoscope, I'm pretty confident it's not the trans.

Wish someone had put some notification that this thread was moved.
If only lol.Already tested this thinking it was an exhaust leak. Exhaust leaks make a pretty specific noise, and can usually point them out easily.

Its got to be in the trans, clutch, accy, or that gear. Or the engine was assembled wrong (air trapped in all the lifters etc...) but I doubt that
Let me tell you a short
I had a 2.0L with 220,000 miles that started knocking.I thought it was finished. Compression was down to 125psi. I took it for one last drive, then almost bought a next engine.
It had an hks272 cam and activating the OEM cam advance solenoid 20* actually made the engine run worse, so I had disconnected the solenoid for VTC (variable timing control)
That way the car would always run its best
What happens is that gear contains an orifice for oil flow, and if it never turns "on" the oil never fills the crevace, and it starts to 'knock'.
As soon as I turned the solenoid back on, the solenoid goes "click" and suddenly the engine was back to sounding normal.
The fix was to put a switch so I could turn it on and off whenever I wanted from the driver seat. It made the engine lope more (car would run worse) but sometimes that was a neat trick.
I will never get over how much that noise reminded me of rod knock, and how close I came to replacing the entire engine.
In you case it could simply be a programming or wiring error causing an oil related knock in one such mechanism. Otherwise, its a rod bearing (its not a rod bearing) right- so it has to be
and hopefully its not the transmission or related

Issue is RESOLVED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For anyone that has similar noises to me, after I bled the lifters, re-installed them. Engine was quite noisy as the air was bleeding out, and bam. NO MORE NOISE! Evo sounds like a completely normal loud 4G63.
Will be posting a video soon.
Hopefully my long and expensive journey helps someone save money.

Aaahhhhhh!!! Nice!!! I remember when I installed the gsc cams and the lifters it sounded crazy for the first couple seconds then it got normal. Well, I was right on one of the million ideas lol.

The thing is, the noise would have never gone away unless I decided to bleed them. I'm so glad I did. This is basically what I am thinking my original issue was as well.
Here is a video of the after:

So after driving this all day yesterday, and this morning, the issue has not returned. I can now mark this as a very silly issue as resolved.
Wanted to thank every single person in this thread for their assistance/feed back.
Still down to swing by some day, as the girlfriend loves getting food from this place called "Dinner Done" you guys have in Tampa. Thanks again for your help!
