Fujitsubo Legalis R is supposed to be one of the quietest, but will definitely cost you power, especially at higher levels.
HKS HiPower got me pulled over regularly in California. It falls under the legal db limit but its loud and deep enough to travel quite a distance. I didn't even like starting my car at night because the low rumble could be felt inside the house lol. I switched from the HKS to the Tanabe and stopped getting pulled over haha.

I have HKS Hipower Silent. It is extremely quiet, almost like stock sound. BUT. In order to avoid backpressure issues in a high powered engine, you have to add at least a qtp at the downpipe. That way you have the best of both worlds. Civilised and quiet at idle - cruise, loud and efficient at WOT

Yes.

The Evo and how it somehow manages to amplify exhaust noise in cabin , made me super sensitive and hateful of exhaust sounds. So I was always searching for an exact “stock” loudness exhaust setup and not 1 decibel louder . Also it had to be 3” , no restrictions and not be a dump tube under the middle of the car. I had both this and Varex muffler. Varex muffler made the car stock quiet that what I was searching for.

I had catless exhaust with Buschur SD rear muffler. This inline variable exhaust buffer did not make my car stock quiet but it functioned well and did not rattle. The round plate in the middle does not seal the exhaust completely . There is a slight gap to allow your motor to breath when it’s fully closed. And just as exhaust passes through that gap so does sound. So it will not dampen exhaust noises completely. Just don’t do WOT pulls when it’s closed.

Because different exhausts setups will result in different sound suppression/dynamic, i can’t say for certain how it will perform to your liking. Plus everyone has different opinions on what is loud . For me loud is 1 decibel louder than completely factory stock evo i consider loud .

So to sum it up , you have to try it to see if suppresses sound enough for your liking and your current setup .

MAPerformance had similar item but instead of bolting on you would have to modify your exhaust . This is a simple bolt on between two 2-bolt flanges of your exhaust . I had this installed at the downpipe to testpipe connection area. I wonder if installing different areas (further back towards the rear) would result in slightly different results ?

I run the RRE stealth. Quiet, low profile and stock looking, and makes good power being a 3" straight through design.

I'm running his exact inline choke. Loudness is still there but the pulse is reduced in energy. It's like listening to bass from a 15" subwoofer vs 6x9 speaker. It's still loud but it doesn't carry very far.

Appreciate all the input.

Also considering the buschur with Magnaflow muffler, along with a resonated test pipe?

Thanks for the info, I'll have to give it a go at some point. Which varex did you run? The oval muffler or cylindrical? Apparently the oval style muffler is much quieter. I've heard the "drift cannon" style in person on an Evo and personally still thought it was a bit loud and wasn't a huge fan of the tone, opened or closed.

+3 on The Tanabe Touring Medallion. It does tapper down slightly, but 0.3" less on one specific part inside of a cat back exhaust will never change your life. The build quality is supreme too and it has been on my car since 2009. It will support more than 670whp with a resonated test pipe. Cutouts are nice if you want to remove any and all restriction from your downpipe, but would complicate things. For example, you could get tuned on the cutout open and never go WOT with it closed, or run two maps, one for cutout open and one for cutout closed.

You can get it tuned with cutout open and closed. Tuner will have to tune for 2 different boost levels and curves.

Hence the cutout.

If the tuner is doing their job correctly, you shouldn't need 2 different tunes. Unless you are trying to extract every single HP with it closed too.

The map should be tuned as you go up in boost to work every curve.

Agreed. Maps should be tuned for both situations because boost curves will be different at same rpms. Sorry I wasn't clear earlier.

Forgot to post up my experience with the Varex muffler. Purchased a 3" inlet oval model from MAP performance. Had a muffler shop make axle back piping bolting up to RRE stealth with a 200 cell mil-spec cat. Valve closed the deep bass is gone like turning off a subwoofer in a surround sound system. Robert Honda from RRE commented the car sounds stock, I think it has an aftermarket sound, think 2.5" axle back piping on a 2g Eclipse.

Driving with this setup since January around the San Gabriel Valley with no issues with CHP or local PD, my car is bright *** yellow. Initially I couldn't recognize when the valve was open/closed. Not sure if my ears adjusted or the muffler changed some how.

I've had the Tanabe Medalion exhaust for almost 12 yrs. It has a nice sound, not too loud, not too quiet, but is obviously not the highest flowing exhaust.

I did a review on it when I installed it:
