The oil cap retainer and nut fell into my engine(NEED HELP)

I really need help. My motor was just fully built and ig I put the oil cap on when the nut was loose. Well let me explain. Everything was fine, I was just going for a cruise. I then give it some gas and I see smoke coming from my engine( built ~7k miles ago by English racing). I pulled over to look and my oil cap is missing and there’s oil all over my engine bay. I freak out. I then drove it to the nearest parking lot because where I pulled over at was very dangerous. It ran fine but obviously not worth risking anything so I called a tow truck to bring it back home. I get home, I immediately took the valve cover off. The oil cap retainer was in there right by the top cam, second pocket. My only thought process was that clearly the nut had to have gone into that hole in that spot as well. I tried a skinny magnet on a hanger with no results. I drained the oil and used the magnet in there, still nothing. What should I do. I just spend ~$17k on this motor so I’d really appreciate all the help I can get. Thank you for your time

That’s the spot ....

Moved your thread here for some expert help from the guys @Auranges

Oh Dang on having a loose fastener fall down into the head. Sounds to me the cams have to come out so you can find that loose nut?

In any event welcome to the EvoM boards

Was this an aftermarket oil cap or oem? Hopefully the nut fell to the oil pan , that would be the first place to look.

The nut already made its way to the oil pan. It's fine. The smoke was from all the oil that came out of the open oil fill. Reinstall valvecover, new oil cap, oil/filter and send it..

I'm with LGTD, if it already made its way out of the valve train area then you should be fine. It's probably too big to get sucked up by the oil pickup. If you are really worried about it though you can drop the pan and fish it out. Hell if you drain the oil it might just come right out with it.

It definitely won't go through the oil pick up screen.

completely agree, I didn't mean to sow any doubt, I'm just super use to couching everything I say on the interwebs. I just looked at the nut and there is no way that could make it through the screen.

Oem. I did drain the oil and it didn’t come out, I even used a ****ty magnet to reach in there to try and get it but didn’t get it. My magnet was terrible so I could reach certain spots

You can always pull the oil pan off if you really want to. But if you don't see the nut in the head anywhere, it made its way down there already and it can't hurt anything just chillin in the pan. But if it helps you sleep at night, go for it.

The magnet didn't work because you can't get around the baffles in the pan when you go through the drain hole. If it's not sitting somewhere in the valvetrain then it's definitely in the pan. Nowhere else to go.
