Evo 8 Stock Turbo Replacement Suggestion

New to Evos. Just got an Evo 8 GSR and I am looking to replace the stock turbo but I can't seem to find a stock new OEM turbo online. I plan to keep this car completely stock and I cannot use turbos that requires tune because we have no tuners here in my state (Hawaii). What are some good replacement for this stock turbo? Thank you.

For the price of a new evo 8 or 9 turbo you might as well just upgrade to an FP turbo or similar. You can always do a remote tune.

Evo 8 turbo new is about $2300 (#49378-01520)

Evo 9 turbo $2500 (#49378-01580)

Cheap, good condition used oem turbos pop up in the for sale forum pretty often. I think there may be one posted now actually. Evo 9 turbo would be a slight improvement over a 8 turbo.
Also, you shouldn't be worried about not having local tuners. I wouldn't let that stop me from upgrading turbos. E-tuning has come a long way and there are some very skilled reputable e-tuners in the evo community.

Thank you. I'm new to this whole thing and I have heard that a dyno tune is vastly preferred when tuning these type of cars. I'm just a bit skeptical with these e tunes. I just want my car to be daily driven and hopefully last me a long time.

I can build you a cast 20G in an evo 8 turbo. It's a +1 where the cast 20G is 1mm bigger than your stock (IIRC). Should be good for 20whp with supporting mods. To get an etune, you need to get a hold of tactrix cable and download the software in your laptop. I can build this for $500. You cover shipping.

First question, why are you replacing the turbo? Is it blown up? If it's blown up, you can simply ship it to FP and have it properly rebuilt for ~$250 + shipping as long as the wheels didn't touch the housing and need replaced.

You can also upgrade it to a 71hta and get an Etune from English racing.

Dynos are great to get results of tuning changes and to find the points where engine runs well. I use it to stay within the limits of my stock engine on E85.

I am replacing this stock turbo because when I hard accelerate there is grey-white smoke coming out of the exhaust. I think there is oil burning. But I have not thoroughly looked at it yet. It is just my assumption.

pull off intake pipe and check for play. Push/pull on center nut and press to sides. If no play, turbo is good. If you have more than 1/2 mm of play in any direction, blades probably contacted housing.

Well, some play is normal. If it has enough movement that its smoking, its generally pretty easy to tell that the shaft play is excessive.

Thank you for the advice. I'll try doing that and see if that's the problem when I have the time. But I reckon it needs to be replaced either way since the car is pretty old now clocking at 130k mileage. Since previous 2nd owner daily driven it for 6 years. We have been trying to do all the maintenance to keep the car running fresh and clean ever since we got it.
