Exclamation 2007 Evo 9 SE What is this sound?

Part 1

Part 2

Part 3

Hello all*currently have a evo*9 with around 70k miles that has started to develop a new undesirable sound. A little history this is a built engine making around 400hp. As of right now*it is not being driven, but does not*seem to suffer performance issues when it is. The sound is audible on startup. Been running on a E85 map/tune*longer than normal (got stuck in traffic a bit more than normal past month) and noticed the car was eating up quite a bit more oil than normal when checked. I do see some white coming out the exhaust, and the car has normally eaten some oil but not as much as recent which causes concern. The sound seems to lessen when the car warms up. It goes with the speed of the engine and comes from the Serpentine belt/Timing belt side of the engine. No Check Engine

Just want to narrow down the list to what some other evo owners think.

Ran a compression test all cylinders fire even across*the board 125-125-125-125
Take a look at the oil for coolant/metal looks*clean

No Leaks under the car or on the underside

Took the timing belt cover off. (belt looks to be in decent condition no cracking)
Removed the Serpentine/accessory belt and fired up engine. Noise still remained so can rule out pullies for the alternator, steering pump, etc etc

So Far Suspect:
Water pump
Head Gasket*
?????????

It's either something really big like an engine rebuild or something simple, but*want another opinion.* Any help or input greatly appreciated!

typically timing belt issues sound more like a whine sound.

im not sure what that is....

in for other opinions.

thanks for the response hutch, so upon further investigation I have discovered that it is in fact the water pump (Partially) I took apart the cover and sprayed wd40 until it reached the bearing and the noise stopped so it was defiantly the water pump making the sound.... HOWEVER I'm still in for more fun. I'm starting to believe the head gasket is toast now due to the amount of oil consumption I've been seeing. Also it smells like burning oil. I would still like to confirm this if someone else has experience this before. The car is still under 70k miles, very surprised about the potential head gasket.

might try to get a leak down test... see if that tells you anything

That sounds almost identical to Soso's water pump, which just took a dump on Saturday....

This sounds like the same sound my evo just developed recently. It only happens when the engine is cold and has been sitting over night, once its been running for a couple minutes it fades away. Any other time the sound is not there.

Side-note: Your forum profile says you're located in San Jose (assuming California). If so, Evo's weren't made in the US in 2007, Evo 9's were only 2006 models

Actually, evos were made in 2007 but because they didn't meet side airbag safety requirements, they had to call it 2006 SE. But title is off.

This doesn't make sense. You mentioned in post #1 that you pulled off serpentine belt and noise was still there. If it was water pump, noise should have stopped since water pump is turned by serpentine belt.

They vehicle may very well be a 2006 I will correct it. I just know it's a late model EVO IX SE. So I am currently tearing into the engine to replace the head gasket, thermostat, water pump, timing belt, and whatever else I find along the way. It may not be the water pump if it is run off of the serpentine belt as 2006EvoIXer stated, but I know it comes from the timing belt. When wd40 was applied the noise stopped within a few seconds. It is likely a dry bearing on one of the pullies, but if I'm going to tear into it I might as well replace the whole setup. I will post more pictures along the way, but so far coolant drained and a bunch of stuff removed a couple of the pullies on the passenger side are off as well. More pictures to follow, but waiting for blackfriday promos and parts lol. Thanks

Wait, why pull headgasket? I'd rather have a nicely seated headgasket over a newly installed one any day. It soulds like your timing belt tensioner pulley bearing needs grease, so only replace that if your timing belt is new. If timing belt is old, then do full timing belt replacement with tensioner pulley bearing replacement (may as well change idler pulley bearing at same time). Don't go crazy and replace everything. Lol

If you are not leaking it then you are burning it. When you pull the plugs are they wet? You already stated there appears to be no oil in the coolant. Doubt it's the HG.
How much oil consumption are we talking about here?

The teardown has been on pause. I ordered a Water pump kit and a new thermostat and new gasket kit. The vehicle has always burned some oil, but a manageable amount. However last time in the span of maybe less than 2 months it went through a little over 2 quarts roughly half the capacity of the vehicle. You can visibly see white smoke coming out the exhaust and smell burning oil when the car is in operation. There is no visible leaking that I see from the car. I am suspicious of the turbo and I can snap a picture of the spark plugs later. They seemed dry with normal wear, but when I went to pull them they were a little difficult to remove (thats with a coat of anti seize from the last time I installed the plugs). Could the turbo be eating the oil, whats the best way to check this before tearing into it too much more? also when I drained the coolant it did look clean so I see the concern for it not being a HG. I figured it would be safe to have the parts just incase. I know fore sure that the waterpump/belt/tensioner/pullies are all going to be replaced with the kit and that should stop the noise, but as for the oil consumption am I looking in the wrong spot as for the HG? Compression came out as followed

Well just the fact your plugs remain clean lends me to believe you more then likely have a turbo problem. Pumping 2 quarts of oil through your combustion chambers would show on your plugs. Is turbo stock?

Turbo problem is easy to identify. Remove intake and feel for excess shaft play by the moving the compressor up/down and pulling in/out on it.

But this def sounds like a turbo issues because it's not showing on the sparkplugs.
