that damage doesnt look like detonation (E85 is very resistant to knock)...

that damage looks like dirty oil and viscosity break down to me.

i have a filter on my FF... i come out of the turbo with a 90 degree elbow into a fairly large K&N filter.... fits right behind the grill

Knock knock.
Who's there?
E85.
E85 who? E85 never ever ever knocks! You must be 93 or 91!

I kid. I kid.

Probably too many miles on dirty, dusty roads with no filter. Still, I would like to know what your PTW clearances were.

The car was hardly driven for 4k to 5k miles but YES without a filter mostly coz I couldnt import one coz all the flights were cancelled coz of covid...

but I did measure the pistons they were 85mm im guessing the ptw would be 85.2 but I would had to conform that from the builder, as I said it was made by a well known builder so I dont think its the builders fault.

Yes i got a shorty k&N filter but coz of covid I received it later about 4k miles later ... but running with no filter did its damage i guess, as well did a lot of WOT pulls on the highway for tuning with a mesh on the turbo ...i was running 5w40 in the winters and 10w40 in summers....thr car was broken in 10w30 NON synthic oil as we do sae30 in my country.

The car wasn't "hardly driven" 4-5k miles. It was driven 4-5k miles, simple as that.

PTW clearance is measured with a micrometer and dial bore gauge. You can't guess.

Yup I have asked the builder for the specs

The specs on pistons for PTW are always very tight where 4g motors always seem to do best with about 50% bigger clearance. Too tight and this stuff happens. We've always shot for 4-4.5 thou IIRC.

4 is about minimum. If it's only going to make 400whp, tighter is ok but not needed either. Once more than 6-650whp is the goal, it starts going up.

Yeah, and if you follow the manufacturers spec they claim 2-2.5 or something crazy. So if that motor was just built to spec it was probably way too tight.

PTW depends on piston material and power target.. Stock pistons work at silly low PTW because that alloy doesnt expand much. Mahle racing pistons in 4032 expand less than wiseco's that use 2618 (or similar)... so a Mahle in 4032 alloy will work fine with 2.3/1000 inch, stock pistons run 0.8/1000 inch, and wisecos will run 4 - 4.5/1000

It will be interesting to see which PTW this build used, was it built with tq plate, and what is the real cyl size measurement....

I'd prefer a tighter PTW with good fuel/tuning on my own engine .0035 or so

PTW has come down over the years with better fuel, tuning and material. Back in the day people had to run them loose to live. Well, some people still have to run them loose to live.

I wouldn't exclude them just yet. You'd be surprised to see how many reputable builders and machine shops have goofed up engines.
