Daily drive dogbox

Anyone with experience?
PPG seems to make it sound easy and livable.

A dog box is not something to daily drive.

Not because of the noise, but the dogs don't last anywhere near as long as synchronizers. For a weekend car, sure it's ok. But I would never daily a dog box.

yeah, lots of noise, plus you need to be "on it" all the time, with quick and positive shifts and they dont really like loading and unloading of the transmission.. On top of them they need servicing and checkups all the time..

Noise doesnt seem that bad in the ppg video but what do you have to do to "service" them?

They need to be torn down and inspected fairly frequently to check the dog engagement teeth for wear.

Like I said, the issue isn't the noise. It's the intensive maintenance they require. It is a race car part, not a daily driver part.

What do you consider fairly frequently

Does this mean sequentials dont suffer from this problem of crazy maintenance?

An aftermarket sequential would still be a dog box, just with a different gear selector mechanism.

The sequential mechanism might make it easier to land clean shifts, but it's still a high maintenance item.

If you know how a dogbox works vs a synchronized transmission then you should know why they need more maintenance. How frequently depends on many factors, just like how often you need to change a clutch, or tires.

Too frequently for daily driving. The only dog box mfg that offers a maintenance interval (I don't recall who) recommends the box be torn down for inspection every 1000 miles.

Idk why it is this difficult to convince you a dog box for a daily driver is horrendous idea. Daily driver =/= racecar.

So once your north of 750whp what is really the solution? Break 3-4 even with a built trans or go dogbox and replace gears as they break as well? And dont say go auto.

Straight cut, synchronized, 3rd and 4th gears. TRE and English Racing sell them.

You have an extremely warped view of daily driving. Or you don't actually daily drive the car.

The gears will be fine. Really at that level... Everything on the car has a finite life.
