I have never used the pedal pumping and bleed method. I've never understood it lol. for quickie bleeds I just use the ball valve one-man bleeder with 'shallow' pedal pumping.

I think the logical answer to your issue is to just get rid of the kids..... Imagine how much more free time you would have!
