Hello, I recently finished building a forged evo 6 engine with a 4g64 crankshaft with stock cams and cam gears. I tried starting the car and it coughed and spluttered but wouldn't go, my first assumption was it was due to needing a remap but then I considered other options such as the non OEM cam sensor, a fuel issue but I couldn't find anything concrete to prove it. A few quick blasts of easy start did nothing and I knew then something wasn't right. I read a thread somewhere of a guy in exactly the same situation as mine with the same 4g64 stroker in the evo engine and using a non OEM cam sensor and his issue was due to the timing belt not being quite right so with that I checked mine quickly by putting a dowel in cylinder 1 and spinning the engine till it was at the top of it's travel and the cam gears look both to be about 3 teeth back from the marks on the rocker cover. The piston had begun it's descent by the time the cam marks lined up. This to me suggests the timing belt isn't timed right but I'm sure I checked it numerous times using the marks on the crankshaft against the mark on the oil pump and it seemed correct.
I suppose my questions are:
1) Could this cause the car not to start?
2) Is using a dowel the way I have a good enough way to determine the timing is incorrect?
3) Are the timing marks when using a 4G64 crank the same as the regular crank?
4) I will check it this afternoon but if the mark on the sprocket does not line up with the mark on the oil pump when I set the engine to TDC using a dowel, does that mean I need to make new TDC marks to work off?
I've attached a photo below of the exhaust cam position with the engine turned so the dowel said it was at TDC, without removing the cover to check the mark, I'm pretty sure the cam gear looks about 3 teeth too far in the anticlockwise direction
