Starting Engine for First Time
Starting Engine for First Time
I just bought an Evo IX that may have been sitting for awhile. Any advice for making sure the engine is properly lubricated? Does disconnecting the fuel pump before cranking ensure proper lubrication in Evos or is there a better approach?
You're probably fine just starting it and letting it idle for a while once you check the dipstick oil level. If you are really worried, you can disconnect the crank position sensor and crank it a few times until the oil pressure light goes off in the dash.

You can easily drain the gasoline by using a 3/8 fuel hose on the fuel rail return and let it idle out. There's also two drain bolts on either side of the fuel tank.
The best way to start in my opinion would be:
1. Check the oil level. If low add to max level
2. If low level of fuel add at least 5 gallon of fresh gas. If you got full tank - sucks, better to drain and add some fresh gas. Gas gets bad over time. Octane number tends to drop down as it sits in a tank for a long period of time
3. Remove ALL spark plugs (and inspect them as they are out)
4. Crank the engine with starter until the low pressure oil light goes off
Do not crank for more then 10 seconds at a time - may overheat starter. Give it some time to cool off
5. Put the spark plugs back. Do not over tight!
6. Check coolant level and fire up the engine! Let it idle and warm up till the fans kick in
Make sure it's not gonna boil the coolant for some reason
7. Replace engine oil and filter with fresh ones
