Request: Lifter Tick

We are new to the 4G63 engine.

We have an Evo 5 with a rebuilt powerplant using GSC parts (stage I cam, GSC "No Tick" lifters, GSC beehive springs, Manley valves, new OEM rockers). We also have the Kiggly HLA.

Since day one it ticks when cold - enough to be annoying. Once it warms/revs on the highway over 2500 rpm or so it silences.

Seems difficult to ID which one is the culprit. Is our choice to buy another set of lifters and replace all?

Is there any long term impacts - ie while cold we are beating up the valve tips, etc? We drive it gently until oil temp comes up.

Certainly doesn't sound pleasant as we idle out the neighborhood at 0600 (very tight confines here in Germany).

Thanks!

How do you know it's lifter tick?

Good point. Doesn't sound like a rod bearing and it goes away when revs hit 2500+ (I haven't done that cold though). The engine has 7500 miles on it now too. Does sound like the valve cover area...

No noise on any warm restart.

Thanks.

Do those lifters need to be bleed before installing? if so, did you? Although it is a different motor, I just rebuilt a 2grfe and there is a specific procedure to bleed the lifters before reinstalling.

Do you have access to a borescope to check to make sure it's not pistons?
Heavily scored/scratched bores would indicate a problem.
I've seen similar situations

RSMike: Unfortunately, I do not have access to a boroscope. With 7500 miles, I'd think I see other indicators of a damaged bore/piston/ring such as low compression, oil consumption, etc. Doesn't sound like piston slap, but you never know!

RobbieOh: Yes, one pumps them up in oil by inserting a plunger in the top to bleed the air out. I did this and could have not fully bled one of the 16...then again, after the initial engine run, I'd think any hydraulic lash adjuster will be fully bled. Why one loses prime, not sure. Mitsubishi recognizes the condition and mentions increasing RPM to like 3000 rpm will eliminate the noise.

Back to my original question: if this tapping is a lifter - is there longterm damage? Sounds like buying another set is the automatic answer.

Still attempting to get it tuned so we have other priorities currently.

Thanks for the responses!

RSMike: Since you got me thinking...I pulled the plugs and did another cranking compression test (cold)...indicating all good!

So may rule that out. Thanks!

Another quick check you can do.
Take the rocker cover off. Press down on all the lifters and make sure they are all rock hard.
If any of them are soft, they either have air in them or they are busted.

OEM mitsubishi manual says to fill with diesel before installing

gsc lifters need to be bled down before install and you can install them with oil inside but bled down. I would put back the oe pressure regulator and see what happens..
