Can the power steering pump be rebuilt?

Ive got a low mileage (26k) 2004 Evo VIII MR and my power steering pump sounds like a supercharger, even when im just sat in it giving it revs without moving the wheel.

Are the pumps rebuildable in the 7/8/9 cars or are they a sealed unit?
Im gonna replace a few o ring on the weeknd, drain the fluid, chuck new stuff in and give it a re bleed and see if that helps at all.

Cheers
Benny

It’s a sealed unit and it needs to be replaced
try to replace the o rings and bleed it.
if that doesn’t help then replace it.
If you can’t do above then it’s not worth it for a mechanic to do it because of the cost.
are you sure it’s not the belt?

Thanks, yeah I replaced the o rings and re bled it today, I’ve ordered a good condition second hand one that comes with warranty. Na it’s not the belt. I’ve also used a stethoscope on the pump and it sounds like a supercharger through the stethoscope as well.

The idler pulley also makes that noise and sounds like the power steering pump. Autozone sells a replacement for cheap. Just put a screwdriver on the idler pulley nut and place it next to your ear...you'll know.

I had my gates Idler pulley go after like 6k miles. I initially thought it was the power steering and sound was still present when I swapped it out. It was idler pulley. The sound from the idler pulley travels up to the power steering which makes you think its the power steering. Get an oem idler pulley.

Ive also had the idle pulley bearing worn out. Coincidentally it was at the same time as my powersteering pump.

Considering the OEM last me 15 years I just bought a new OEM one. Wasnt cheap...

When replacing you must use a vacuum pump while bleeding according to the FSM.
