Random Technology 3" High Flow cat & CEL?

Has anyone installed the random technology 3" High flow cat and gotten the check engine light?

I read some where that the 2.5" cat wont throw the light for sure, but the 3" was not fully known. I was trying to find someone with first hand experience. If you do have the RT 3" cat, what other exhaust mods do you have with it and has the CEL for O2 sensor ever come on? I was thinking about trying one out, but want to make sure that the CEL wont be a problem.

Thanks,
Brian

Whatup,

I have one on order from Nino, hopefully it will come soon.

I can let you know my experience once I get it and install it, but per Nino, no one has reported a cel.

Thanks,

I have the Random Tech 3" High Flo along with TurboXS DP, and TurboXS Catback and so far NO SES light from it

BTW, It probably has 1,000 miles on it already

IMO, if it were to thow a CEL then I might as well would have gone catless

While I don't run the Random Cat, I have an interesting experience that might help you.

I have the Vishnu Sig. Exhaust that runs a 3" hi-flo cat. Unfortunately, I have no clue as to the brand. As much as I liked the turbo-back, it did drone a bit on the highway, so I looked for a silencer I could fit into the tailpipe.

I found this:
http://www.secureperformanceorder.co...ore/vortex.cfm

I got the 4" version to fit the magnaflow tip.

Well, I then got a SES with the code reading P0420 (inefficient catalyst). I was like WTF?? Never got one before and I had just got the custom Dynoflash, so I thought it was because of the wide-band tuning and the necessary removing of the back factory O2 sensor.

Well I cleared the code and sure enough, the light came back on within 5 miles. I spoke w/ Al and we couldn't figure out what was causing the error code. Then it dawned on me that I added the silencer right after I got the Dynoflash.

I removed the silencer and cleared the code. So far (2 months) no SES light.

Somehow, the added backpressure of the vortex silencer was enough to trip the SES light. I really can't figure out the mechanics/chemistry behind the backpressure and catalyst inefficiency.

But if you're going w/ the 3", going with an exhaust that flows as straight through as possible could prevent any SES headaches.

I got my Random Technology 3" direct fit cat. I have it installed with the Helix 3" downpipe and a Greddy Racing titanium catback. I drove about 120 miles. I thought everything was perfect, then out of the blue, when coming back home the Service Engine soon light came on. I hooked up to the OBD2 port with the pocketlogger and pulled the code. P0420 inefficient catalyst. I reset the code and will see if it comes on again. The smell is gone that I used to get with the test pipe, but the CEL came on. Has anyone else had this problem?

Myself and others in my area have had no problems with the Ultimate Racing 3 " high flow cat with a total of about 16k never had any check engine light at all. I know the Random one uses a smaller brick design copared to the UR one maybe that has some effect to be throwing a CEL.

The Random cat is a good looking cat. Looks like a resonator. It is supposed to be emissions legal. I like it alot, I just wished it would keep away the SES light. I wonder if anyone else is having this problem or am I the only one?

i have a catco 3" cat for 2k miles no cel. ever
it is a compromise....better the flow, more chances of cel
i did't want to deal with it, that's why i chose catco over random, even though random looks to be the best flowing cat available
hope this helps

So whats the down side of the CEL.
Does it put the car in any kinda limp mode?

Or is it that glaring light that bothers ya?

You can't tell if something else is wrong if the CEL is on all the time. It won't pass emissions testing like that either. It doesn't run any different with the light, so it doesn't hurt performance any. Just a little aggrevating that I am running an emissions legal catalytic converter yet my ECU tells me it is not operating properly. I had a UR test pipe for 2000 miles and never had a check engine light come on. Now I am totally legal and my CEL comes on. Kind of ironic.

Oops, I was supposed to post after I got my RT cat installed, sorry about that.

I have 3" Helix DP, RT 3" cat, and a Bushur AB (stock intermediate pipe).

I have about 2K miles on it, and no CEL. Sorry to hear about your problem. Perhaps it's because I don't have a full 3" cat back? However, others with a 3" cat-back also post no CEL...

Good luck,

I am going to try the spark plug anti-fouler trick to see if that fixes it. It took quite a while before the CEL came on. I am hoping that one anti fouler adapter will make enough difference to keep it from coming on. If it doesn't then I will use both of the spark plug adapters. I think my catback may be a little too high flow. I bet I wouldn't have the problem with the muffler silencer installed.
