cam question

now i know what cams do im just exactly sure of their setup. cams are next up on my car so i want to be sure if this will really benefit me to its fullest extent. i know there is an intake and an exhaust cam. this makes a pair of cams. is it necessary to buy both or can you buy one at a time?? also what about cam gears??? thanks.

hey man, i am not 100% sure but i think that the intake and exhaust cams should be upgraded together, the differences in profiles/lift/duration will be too great... you dont really need the cams gears unless you want better idling and restore some low-end bhp, preferbly you should get it as well I think. There is an interesting thread on this topic by silver surfer about changing cam settings on the HKS 272's:

https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...ad.php?t=74284

The cams you want will depend on your turbine setup, how you use your car (daily road, street, track, drag) as all cams have different specifications to suite different needs. Also, depending on the aggresiveness of the cams chosen you may require something to control your air/fuel such as a programmable e.c.u to make use of its full potential...

So its a question of what are you expecting from a cam change?

I hope that will help, but get the others opinions as I may be wrong!!

cheers!

alright thanks. thats a start for sure. i use my evo as a daily driver and havent tracked it yet. even when i track/drag it this will not be a regular thing. my car is now 100% daily driver and even if/when i race it will still be 95% daily driver. ive heard they can add low and top end power. some low would be nice for sure......

also one more thing. i think the main thing along with money holding me back is that the stuff i have done to my car so far is pretty much standard/simple. i feel that getting cams is like taking a run off the cliff and for some reason i think it will make my car less reliable in the long run and give it a better change of blowing turbo/engine. is this true or is it a relatively safe upgrade with some headstuds???

Hey! I'm goin with HKS straight 272's and cam gears this summer...maybe we should get them done at the same time/place. That'd be cool...Maybe a lil cheaper too?

BTW, with headstuds you're pretty safe and shouldn't have to worry about anything as long as the install is not shotty. The gears, as already mentioned, will make it more bearable (idle-wise). That made my decision on the gears.

Properly chosen cams are really not that bad... I suggest a HKS 264 in/264 ex setup will be ideal for you as it is known to be the most streetable. The price is very competitive, dont need cam gears, almost stock like idling, minimal loss in low-end power and drivability. The cams should give you the same gains as the HKS 272's which is in a conservative estimate of about 15hp and 30mn torque to the wheels. The evos may gain more. This is also assuming you retain the stock turbine and keep within 7500rpm. Your initial mods should also help gains go up abit more...

You might have to change your valve springs as well, there was a thread debate about this and i'm not sure if they've come to any conclusions. Personally, I would change them. I am not sure about the head studs though, but better safe then sorry eh? So HKS 264 in/ex cams, HKS valve springs, ARP studs and a reflash... I think you'll find it quite worthwhile...

cheers!

thanks again guys. i really dont care about idle noise or exhaust being loud. lets just say due to my job i dont really get harassed by cops. im mostly worried about performance/reliability of my car and of course the almighty dollar. if it came down to it i would probably say screw the gears. im spending enough on roughly 600 for both cams, 200 for headstuds, and possibly a tune for A/F ratio. if i get it within a year ill get another flash from al cause i got one in march. but either way im looking at 800-1000 thats not including install on any of these. this is not chump change!!!

These things never come cheap i guess... *sigh* but in a way its good.. cause you dont want to be able to do everything to your car at once. It will take the fun out of it.... heh heh.. the researching, the learning, the yearning....

They came to the conclusion that messing around with the head and installing valve springs is more hazardous than leaving it alone. Studs should only cost $100, and the cams themselves, well, good luck finding the best price...

Cams don't make your idle louder (well, some say there is more valve tap) but what they will do is make your idle more erradic. Hesitation, stumbling, and stalling is the problem everyone tries to even out with hotter cams. I happen to like the sound of a 4 banger loping on its cams, but that's just me...
