The number is there for reference. Take a look at the oil and if it's dark and dirty then change it even if you just change it the other day. Commen sense!

I'm not sure I understand the meaning of dirty oil.

Won't oil pick up carbon deposits from the engine and hold them in suspension?

Won't the filter remove larger deposits?

Isn't this what both are designed to do?

Oil will never remain clear and it's not designed to do so. With modern synthetic oil which does not breakdown as dino oil does, you can extend oil changes with complete safety. 5,000 mile oil change intervals are still erring on the cautious side and probably by only changing the filter at 5,000 miles, you could extend the oil change to 10,000.

Bottom line - change as often as makes you comfortable, but don't think you need just because the oil looks dirty.

Porsche's (911) have a dry sump. They have a TON of oil to contaminate before they need changed...

The manual states 3000 for hard use 5000 for light use. Do what the manual says, because if you have an engine failure everyone, the dealer, the service guys, the manufacturer, everyone, is going to point at those numbers before they will cover you.

Every 2000 miles.

I change with royal purple 15-50 and mobil 110 oil filter.
You'll feel it on your butt dyno how smooth it is.

If you can't use judgement by looking at it then I suggest you leave it to chance. I know I wouldn't. Try looking at it the oil when you fist put it in. After a few days and then after few months. You will see the difference.

Really? Do you? I mean, my oil looks crappy after a week. Changing the oil every other day would get expensive and time consuming. I thought someone said synthetic is "dirtier" looking?

Yep - I agree it looks darker. I guess my point was it's meant to (holding particles in suspension, etc.) as it's doing it's job. The color of the oil (dark, light, black, etc.) shouldn't be the determining factor in deciding on an oil change.

Again, go with an oil change period that you feel comfortable with, but 5,000 is fine and very conservative.

If your oil looks crappy after a week then you need some engine work/cleanup depending on what you mean by crappy. By all means do what you think it's right for you. I don't use a certain mileage point to change my oil. I check the oil regularly and change it base on time and appearance.

I use Mobil 1 in both my turbo and non-turbo vehicle. The Evo gets a oil change after 3,000 miles because the engine runs really hot. In my other 4 banger n/a car, I change the oil at 7,000 miles because the car runs at lower rpm's and does not run quite as hard or hot as my Evo. I periodically check the oil in both vehicles and I can tell you the n/a car oil seems to stay lighter longer. On the other hand, the Evo oil at around 2,000 miles starts looking like the 5000 to 6000 mile mark on my n/a car. This is the reason why I do my oil changes at every three thousand.
