What is the use of a high flow cat?

I am in the process of selecting components to upgrade my Evo. It is not easy as there are many goodies for this machine. Anyway, I am trying to piece together a good 3" exhaust that will be emissions legal. I am trying to find a good cat to complete it. My question is what is the use of a high flow cat? I keep hearing things that it may not pass emissions etc. Everyone seems to be using the Ultimate Racing one. I also inquired about Vishnu's. I figured he is out in California. With their stricter emissions, his catalytic converter has to be good. But then someone said even his may not pass. I am looking for a cat that will go through the inspection station with no problems. If a high flowcat won't pass what's the use? I might as well stick with the stock one. I had a Buschur one with my 91 Eclipse that was okay, but that was a 2.5 inch. Not to mention his 3" is a slip fit, so it will only fit his exhaust and is not compatible with other 3" exhausts.

Wow! 45 views and no reply. I guess we are all having a reality check and are unsure of their cat's emission control capability. So much for self-confidence.

I'm holding onto my stock exhaust, so I can just put it back on if I have to... I think most people don't know yet because most people have had their Evo for less than 1 year, so haven't had to go in yet for testing... VA is every 2 years... Where do you live?

Look for random tech. They are the leader with HI-flow cats. They should have enough information for you.

With the Evo being a LEV ( low emission vehicle ) it will be hard for it to pass even with a high flow cat.

I believe it has to filter out at least 80 % of smog compared to 70 % on previos gen turbo mitsus.

just save the old cat just in case.

The benefit of a high-flow cat is to not smell like hell and pollute like hell all the time...while still only dropping a few HP from a test pipe (cat delete). As far as California goes, I have no idea if any of 'em will pass.

I have VISHNU's signature DP and CAT back - its awesome. You'll be pleased with the quality and fit of this system - expensive but worth it.

No cats EVER on a turbo car, I'll just bolt on the stocker for that one day test in 1007
