9.8t titanium turbos vs 10.5, what is this?

I've seen a set of Ti turbos for sale, but dont know how the 9.8 or the 10.5 Numbers corelate to our turbos that come on the car on our evos? can someone explain what this is? Also do the UK turbos fit our US spec cars? Is it a straight swap? Are the internal parts the same as ours?

from what i know, the numbers are the size of the diameters of the turbos. 9.8 is the current size of '03 evos and 10.5 is goin to be the diameters size of the '05 evo 8, rs, & mr. i could be wrong. someone correct me if this is wrong. for your other questions evo8speed, i not quit sure. but, i'm sure someone else will help you out

This corresponds to the nozzle area in cm2. But I'm not 100% sure what the nozzle is? Is it the air intake opening of the compressor?

Nozzle is the exhaust housing exit area. A larger nozzle will generally slow spool but reduce exhaust backpressure on the big end allowing for more power.

Couldn't have said it better myself. The power gain is around 5hp at stock boost levels, no big deal really. The big difference is the 9.8t is designed for the five speed, the 10.5 is designed for the 6 speed.

As far as I know, there are NO plans to bring any titanium units to the US on any 05 models. They all will be steel units. The titanium units build boost almost 1000rpms sooner than the steel units.

Well, that last part is not correct, the 10,5 has been around since the VI, if not earlier, and it has for sure no more than 5-speeds.

ALthough it isn't 100% correct, having closer ratios will minimize the drawbacks of the larger nozzle (mainly lag), and will utilize the slight high rpm power gains better, right???

The V was the first unit to use it, and the VI was the last. Gotta consider why they stopped using it. for the VII and VIII.

as far as I can figure, yes. You don't want big lag with the longer ratios of the five speed. I know it's probably not HUGE lag at all, but they stopped using the 10.5t for a reason.

As if our 5 speed has these huge ratios anyways

2000rpm drop from 4th to 5th too much for ya, all the other gear changes are closer to 1500rpms anyways and on the six speed I cant imagine them THAT much closer

the gain isn't so much power as its more of instantanious responce in the upper RPM's... when cruising in higher rpm's and then nailing the gas boost kicks in quicker then it would with a standard turbo becasue more air can flow over and by the turbine wheel allowing it to spin up easier... so spool up in the low RPM is slower buy in the higher RPM's its quicker

Nah, the engineers are good....just don't believe anything anyone who works at a dealership says. I called about the MR like three months ago, the parts guy told me that it was gonna come with an 18g turbo (?)
