Question New Clutch - Ungodly new whine

I just had a new ACT clutch put in. While they were in there, I had the SS clutch line and restrictor removed. The new clutch FEELS great, but I now have this ungodly drivetrain whine.

I did some searches and the closest thing I could find was transfer case whine. Let me describe the symptoms and see if anyone can give me the answer.

The whine is speed dependent. You can hear it going pretty slowly. At 35 mph it is noticeable. At 70 mph it is really loud -- loud enough to overpower the radio. The pitch rises along with volume as speed rises. It is not rpm dependent and it sounds the same whether I am in 4th or 5th gear. In addition, I only hear the sound under two conditions: 1. I am applying throttle and the car is in gear or 2. The car is not in gear.
If i am just coasting in neutral without pressing the clutch, I hear it. If I am coasting with no throttle and the car in geear I don't hear it. If i press the clutch pedal then I hear it.

Since I didn't have the noise before the mechanic took everything apart and put it back together gratis. He is stumped as to what the noise is and is not planning on going in again until Tuesday.

Any ideas what I should tell him to look at? If this is the transfer case, what should I do about it? I never heard even a hint of this before the new clutch. The mechanic has said they will fix anything they broke, but it would be a ***** to get them to pay for a new transfer case.

I had my tranny built twice. Once they did the 5th gear and a Cusco 2 disk carbon. The 2nd was qa 3rd gear syncro and a slew of parts. The 2nd build, 1st gear whines like a b!tch, none other do it...in your situation, I wonder what the transfer case would be "gone"?

As an update. I drove it about 50 miles this weekend. The noise is still there but it has gotten noticeably quieter. Could this be an imperfectly machined flywheel?

What kinda fluid was put in your tranny and transfer case. It is possible that the wrong weight fluid was used causing the wine or worse the case to go bad.

No it's your t-case. a "imperfectly machined flywheel" wouldn't cause a noise like that. Don't drive it that's the worst thing you could do. Go the where you got the clutch installed and make sure the put the right kind of fluid in the t-case and now that I think about the transmission for that matter. GL-4 is used the the trans. and 75w90 in the t-case.

good luck.

do not use anything lighter than SAE 90w for the transfer case. If you can not find that then use 75-140 on the t-case.
