Speed Source bushings aren't very good

I think I'm the only person alive who can mess up a shifter bushing install. I installed the Speed Source 2 piece underhood kit and 4/8 piece internal shifter plate kit. Everything went fine, until I go to drive this morning. You know how the Evo shifter centers right in between 3rd & 4th? You know, to shift to 3rd from 2nd you basically just have to push it up? Well, if I do that it hits 1st. I have to move the shifter over to hit 3rd and the general shifter feel is, well, stiff. I followed the supplied instructions, so I know I didn't install anything in the wrong place and everything fitted fine . So, what did I do wrong?

Did you use some grease on the underhood bushings? I don't thing the kit mentions it, but I did when I put mine in and everything is fine.

One other posibility is that you twisted on of the shift cables over (flipped the loop) when you put everything back together. That might also change the shifeter feel.

Hmmm, the instructions do actually mention that some grease should be applied. However, I, ermm, well, uh, I didn't have any. I didn't even think about that. Guess I'll pick some up on the way home and see if that sorts things out.

Well, it ain't the grease, that's for sure. After the C clamp goes on there it pushes it down so far that it just binds on the spindle. Seems like the hole hasn't been drilled right (this is becoming a far too common occurence for me). More money pissed down the drain on stupidly made ****ing pieces of ****. Stock crap rubber is back in and at least I have the right shifter feel now. Don't buy Speed Source stuff, it's crap.

Sounds like a bad install to me. The SpeedSource stuff fits great. I have all of it from the line to the bushings. Flawless. How can you make such a general statement based soley on your experience? Ridiculous assesment. Maybe if you had taken the time to grease the bushings you would have realized that you have to keep the bushing pressed in while you fit the c-clamp. Otherwise you run the risk of the clamp only going around half the bushing. Take you time and do things right the first time and so many parts that you buy won't be "defective." And you won't have to post about how "this always happens to you."

Right, because sliding a bushing over a spindle and putting on a C clamp leads to lots of problems . How could I possibly not put on a bushing right? The bushing was pressed in when I installed the C clamp. The fact is that the bushing is too tight on the spindle and will not allow the spindle to rotate inside it, whcih leads to the shifter feeling stiff. Besides, if you're not there with me how can you make such a general statement about my ability to install the bushings?

Mirrors always show us how we look, eh? Don't disparage a company because of your isolated experience. I have had a great experience with them (with more products than you have) so does that make them perfect? No. But your's doesn't mean they suck either. They're fine.

How are they fine? Mine isn't. The whole finish of the bushings isn't what I'd call top notch either. The instructions are great and the emery cloth is a nice touch, but it doesn't change the fact that the bushing doesn't work. I'm posting about my experience, not yours, and it was crap.

Did you use the included emory cloth on that spindle?

I've installed multiple Speed Source bushings on my and other EVOs and haven't had any post-install issues. I did have to remove some material from a single bushing in order to get it on the end of the cable, but that took all of five extra minutes.

Go back and try again, you won't regret it

Yes, about 5 or 6 times. I really doubt that the hole is mis-drilled because I'm sure it was done on a lathe and you'd have to try pretty hard not to get the hole centered. If I put the bushing in the ring on the cable and slip it over the spindle then everything's great. It's when I push it down so that I can put the cotter pin in that it starts to bind. Alternatively, if I leave the C clip off then it's also fine. I would go and try it again but, ermmm, there's some waste land across the street from me and I got a little agitated and it's over there. Somewhere. I'm just going to buy the KartBoy piece.
