meta. why would sticking to stock cams give you a better bootom end? the grater the lift on the cam and the grater the duration at 1mm the quicker the spool up is. the quicker the spool up the better the bottom end! are my thoughts wrong?

thanks Chris.

Hey GTVEVO,

Thanks for taking the time to create and post that video.

I'm not sure if it's the video or not, but I don't think that car sounds as smooth as stock when idling. I see you have the 264/272 combo. Could someone with straight 264's comment on that vid? I was under the impression that straight 264's sounded very close to stock, but now I'm not sure.

I realize that some people like or don't mind a rough idle, but I prefer it to be as smooth as possible. For example, I don't want it to sound like I have a cam upgrade. The car in the vid def sounded like it had one to me. Maybe that's not even possible with any cam upgrade.

Np, As smooth as stock was a comment on the valvetrain so I didn't mean to misslead you there. The idle right now is very loopy as bigger cams can be. But this is only the case because of the cam gear settings that I am running. Currently the gears are set to -1 on the intake and -3 on the exhaust cause it to sound like that but it also gives more power in mid to top end. I understand that some of you want a stock sound and in that case just don't install the cam gears because once you change the settings it changes the overlap and causes the mean sound. With the grears set to zero and zero it idles normal and smooth as stock with only a very very small difference. If I get a chance I will change my settings and post another vid so you can see it as well.

I have a friend with JUN 272/272 and cam gears, and his idle has that mean looping sound too. It's kinda neat. It sounds like it's going to die, but never does.

Ya good to hear from ya I was there at Dave in busters and I meet you at the Dyno Day back when you got the Works Flash. I have a Silver Evo. That was my added insperation for that sound as well.

Everyone, I put another video out there with Zero at the end of it. This is a video of HKS 264Intake and 272Exhaust cams with the Cam Gears set a zero. Less looping so more of a stock sound. You still can hear a small difference compaired to stock but idle is much smoother than with the gears retarded so I hope this helps with your decision on them.

I completely forgot I started this thread. I am so glad everyone is putting in their thoughts and merging other threads to help out. The decision making process is still so difficult. We have people who feel HKS is top notch due to its construction and performance. And there are others who feel that Jun or the rally cams are better with added springs. ?????....Man...this is tough. I dont plan on buying cams to sell them for a new pair. How much est. difference is there in HP given the same mods with the more aggressive cams...say HKS 272's versus.
Thanks

If you want low mid and top go with 272in 264ex HKS. Look at my 1/8th mile time. I recently ran a 7.5 at 93mph on pump gas! I can't possibly see how stock have mor low. If Bucher said it I believe it, but am sticking with what I have.

Did you mean 264 intake and 272 exhaust?

No I meant 272in and 264ex. People in England experimented with it and with cam gears you can pull more overall power than any other combo. They all run this combo over there. My low/mid hits so hard that with race fuel I break all 4 loose at a roll stepping on it. I chirp 1-2 2-3 and 3-4 feels like a launch but no chirp. You won't be disappointed.

Good input! Are you on the stock clutch with that power?? Worried about too much stress on the driveline with all the shifting power?

i never said they were the same! the 264's have the same lift as the 272's so if buschur is ok with stock valvetrain so am i.

Cusco twin disc clutch - No I'm not worried. I bought and built my EVO to drive hard not worry. It sucks when it breaks. I'm not rich, I'm in the military. I'll be going back to Iraq soon so if it breaks oh well. I plan on getting my tranny and transcase built anyways when I'm gone. I can't wait. Later.
