Question To cam or not to cam that is the question.

Who has done the research and found the best cams? HKS or whatever. I am seeing alot of HK$$$, but I was wondering if most of the manufacturers are of equal quality. Also, what combo of cams is best to run for street performance?
Thanks

A lot of guys on here run HKS (Either 264's or 272's or a mix). I think Tomei and Piper's 260 would be nice on a stock turbo Evo, but because of the increased lift, you need to do some headwork (Springs, retainers, etc.) so you don't float a valve.

For a day's work, go for the HKS. They're proven and they work rather well.

The HKS 272s require the same valvetrain type of mods as the piper and tomei cams and doont have the extra lift that they do. I only see it as two ways to go. Either run HKS 264 cams on stock valvetrain or upgrade valvetrain and go with some nice piper/Tomei high lift cams. this has been beaten to death in another forum. do a search.

Um, I have HKS 272's on an otherwise stock head. No problems and I track it pretty hard.

HKS themselves say not to run the stock valvetrain. Its just not safe.

I plan to run some Jun 264 cams when I get enough extra money. Great duration and still high lift. Need new retainers and springs as well though, but so worth it IMO

If you plan on keeping stock turbo and factory ECU I would go with the 264in - 264ex
combo or if you don't mind a rough Idle and want Mountains of torque run the 272in -
264 ex combo. Hks cams of course, I have done both combos on a few evo's and for the most part I like the 272in - 264ex combo myself. I feel for the stock turbo its the way to go.

What all cams can you put in WITHOUT ANY other engine mods. I want some cams that you can put in w/o having to upgrade valves, retainers, head studs, injectors, etc. Cam someone give me a list, or I'll add to this post??

I know of:
1) WORKS 269 Power Cams.
2) HKS cams, both 264 and 272 (added)

Hey Guack007,
are you arware the HKS 264 and 272s have the same lift? Therefore would require the same springs. The duration has nothing to do with springs. Higher lift requires springs that can clear the lift and higher rpms require stronger spring to keep the valves closed during the higher rpms.
Don't give out bad info if you don't know.
HKS = good for stock valve train, every other cam set-up requires springs/retainers.
