Single vs Dual disc clutches

Ok, flame me if yah want, but what's the added benefit of the dual disc clutch if the HP ratings are the same?

From what I understand it's added "bite" but really, if they are rated at the same power the single should grip as well as the double.

Sorry for the newb question, but I can't seem to get a solid answer.

You can slip a twindisk without too much worry since there is twice as much friction material, and twice as much surface area.

Wouldn't slipping a clutch, or riding, be worse or better dependent on the clutch material?

Usually a single disk with the same torque capacity has higher pedal effort than the equivalent twin disk - you got more surface area, so you need less spring pressure.

Twin disk usually feels less linear and can sometimes feel awkward in city driving (buy a reputable brand and preferably try one out) but if you are putting the power through it it's definitely the way to go.

So my question is, what single disk clutch is indestructable? Do they make a single disk carbon clutch? I'd buy that. I don't want a multiplate clutch but I do want one to handle about 450-500 HP and let me slip it if I want to and never wear out. What do I need to buy?

I don't think you will find a single plate for that kind of horsepower. If you did it would have insane pedal pressure. There is no doubt in my mind that for that horsepower level twin plate is the way to go.

The twin plate allows you to have insane clamping force with almost stock like pedal feel. I like my ATS twin, nice and heavy, but not too much.

Ok, how about 400 HP. BTW, doesn't the ACT hold 497 ft. lbs? That's a single plate. So how about something like the ACT but made of carbon? That's what I want.

The ACT's fine, if you want an Exedy that's painted yellow. :-)

The multiplates are good, as mentioned before, for having stock like pedal feel and tons of grip without making it look like you ********** furiously with your left leg.

Is that why my right arm looks like I inject steroids into it? Damn.

Still no info on a carbon single plate clutch huh? Is it even possible?

Excedy makes a single carbon:
New Product Announcement!
Hyper Carbon Series

We have developed the best carbon structure with high burst strength and torque transferring capabilities as a performance clutch. With the carbon, we tuned for Friction Coefficient to get smooth operating @ Cold Condition like street, and High Torque transfer @ hot condition such as Race Circuit. Our Hyper Carbon Clutch has superb easy operation, best inertia and extremely high torque capacity in this class of product.

Long Life Design:

Exedy Semi Carbon possesses a life span greater than 2.3 times the average of a Metal facing and 1.3 times longer life when compared to other carbon clutch manufacturers.

Advantages:

q Lightweight: Improved shift response.

q Strong heat resistance: No disengagement problems caused by disc deformation.

q Long Life: Low friction material wear rate.

Easy Operation: Easy to use in the “Half Engaged” zone offering a comfortable operation either at the circuit or at the street.
Here's a quote from the new carbon twin/triplle series explaining the difference and indicating the Hyper carbon is a SINGLE.
This clutch is quite different then the Hyper Carbon Series, The Hyper clutch has a single carbon disc, where the MM023SBMC has 3- carbon discs. It is a unique pull type clutch that is patented by Exedy
So there you have it.
