Weird sound coming from engine

Im hearing this weird sound like my piston is hitting the valve cover when the engine is cold. After it gets hot, the sound goes away. This wasnt happening before i did my oil change using 15W-50 fully synthetic oil. Is this normal?

Doesn't sound normal. Why are you running 15W-50?!? What is the correct oil viscosity called for over there for the 7? I realize that it gets pretty hot over there but no hotter than where I live (during the summer) and we run Mobil1 10W-30 as spec'd for the 8. Do you have an oil pressure gauge? I bet if you did it would be pegged or indicating MUCH higher oil pressures, especially when cold.

Besides, where your living, I doubt you need such an extended viscosity range. Extended viscosity range oils just wear out more quickly.

I just had an oil change and I am running 10W-30 Mobil 1 synthetic for the first time. I used to use 15W-50 because of the heat of where i live. But the thing is, when the car gets hot. It stalls when I am in idle. Its like i have bad gas but I don't.

Dunno. I'm going to guess that the hydraulic lifters like a certain oil viscosity. You probably wouldn't have any issues if you were using solid lifters and shims.

Sounds like lifter or valve noise to me which should be normal.

Its the hydralic lifters. A known problem with Mitsu. It doesnt hurt anything though just takes some time for them to fill up with oil is all.

Why did you switch to thicker oil? Do you live in a cold environment? Like others have mentioned earlier, that noise is your lifters and is not big deal. They've been ticking like that ever since the 1g DSMs. There are three versions of the lifters that were used on the DSMs. I'm not sure if Mitsu has revised the design for the EVOs or not.

If it sounds like it is coming from the rear of the engine where the intake manifol is then it is your lifters. It will sound like a loud clicking noise. Known problem with DSM's and now Evo to. Oh well.

I agree, it seems those are you hydraulic lifters. That normaly happens when using a thicker oil due the longer time used to fill lifter chambers and remove trapped air (once hot it´s faster). Why 15W-50?...use the recommended 10W-30, 5W-30 or 0W-30 (Castrol RS)

How about the dreaded clutch rattle ? Jump in the car and see if you can still hear the noise. If you can push in the clutch and see if it goes away.

haha.. damn man, I know you got a grudge against mitsu, but lifter noise isn't really a "problem" since this guy's noise was induced by him using a thicker oil. For those of us who use the factory recommended 10W30 Mobil 1, the noise isn't even an issue.

Even with the older lifters, the noise seemed to always go away after putting in some Mobil1. Thinner oil does help too.

I have also been using 15W 50 "performance driving" Mobil 1. I got it for a little extra protection. My buddy uses 10W 30 and you can hear lifters in his car once in awhile also. I just think some cars do it and some don't.

Hey!!!..

I was wondering what I was hearing over the weekend. Same thing , goes away when I press the clutch slightly.
First time I heard it after 19,900 miles.

After doing some spirited driving...... WHALLAH!!! hasn't come back yet. knock on wood.
