bad smell coming from engine area

first off i am new here

i dont own and evo but my friend just got one and I am diong some of his work. He let another kid drive it one night( not a smart idea) and the kid decided to launch the car at like 5k. he got all 4 to spin and it took off like abat out of hell but after that ther was a burning smell from the engine compartment. I dont think that the clutch is bad because I tested it to the best of my knowledge. I do feel a little carbon build up(like a little hesitation engaging in 1st) but the smell will not go away. does any one have any ideas about what this could be or has anyone experienced this before. My friend is really worried that they wont warrantee it if it breaks. the car is stock right know but not for long(at least if i have anything to do with it)

all responses are appreciated

Thank you

he just got one like how long ago?? well i just bought mine a week ago and i had an engine smell, basically from what i have been told in these forums is that its just the engine during break in period... but if your friend just purchased his Evo and hasnt gone threw the break in period i wouldnt suggest launching and letting other people drive the car like that!! hope this helps

That's the clutch, the smell won't go away for a couple of days. Don't ask me how I know!

def...the clutch. If you can feel it slipping in 1st gear it is toast. Put the car under load in 5th gear and see if it slips then.

Ohh by the way the clutches are weak as hell in these cars...they are designed to slip and that is why some people only get like 3k miles out of them. Me on the other hand after 300+whp and about 20 launches and hard driven my clutch laster 12k

I think it's the clutch. When I first bought my Evo, I had that smell during the breakin period even with no launches. You might continue to smell it throughout most of the breakin period.

Well if an idiot launched it at 5k and didnt know what he was doing, then its probally your clutch. This is the main reason why I don't let people drive my car.

he deserves to shell out for a new clutch for being an idiot to let someone drive (aggressively) on his new evo

he has had the car for about a month and about 2k on it know. The smell is still there and but faint. I think that the clutch was beaten up and it just needs to heal itself. like I said I think that it has carbon build up and most of that is gone because there is not more hesitation in first gear. My friend told that kid that if the clutch goes soon then he will pay for it cause he didnt give him permision to launch it like that because he babies the **** out of the thing. any way I think that it is okay for know but we will see.
