one question...Why RWD conversion?

Its not plausable price wise I dont believe...but... to each his own.

I dont think it would be best.

That would be an interesting conversion.

Is there enough room in the engine bay for the transmission and the engine to face north-south?

Ditto on what Outlaw said.

IMO RWD makes sense only on cars with 50/50 weight balance or with a rear weight bias. That way you put the traction wheels where you have... well traction .

The Evo has 60/40 I believe so AWD that can shift torque around makes perfect sense. RWD would not, IMO.

i think it would be cool to have AWD for the 0-60 and then have a switch for rwd. I know a few years back at the DSM shootout there was a skyline that had this built in.

I doubt you would be able to do a shift on the fly 4wd-2wd. I know my truck would not do it. I use to launch my truck in 4wd cause I couldn't get it to hook in 2wd. My truck I us to have had shift on the fly 4wd. I could be driving down the road below 45mph and shift into 4 high.

I'm pretty sure the skyline gtr's come from the factory with a selectable transfercase. kinda like a truck. but I'm not for sure.

Im sure that a conversion like that is very plausible, but like many people said it would not be very useful and would probably just hurt you if you plan on using it as a race car. However, this conversion would cost a bit of money and everything is damn near possible with money these days. If you have a dream of a RWD EVO, go for it, I'm sure it will be one of a kind.

On a side note: There was talk of a 2000-2004 Mitsu Eclipse to be converted to AWD or RWD, and the general consensus was that it will very expensive, the body cutting, suspension changing, engine placement etc...

Just weld the center diff, not hard at all.

The way the engine is mounted makes it unfeasible to do rwd. The engine should be front to back instead of left to right (horizontially opposed) the wrx can do it and so can r34 but w/ the diffs the way they are in evo, you would be losing a lot of power in the drivetrain, and also the rear diffs aren't made to take 100% of the torque. the wrx conversion i saw needed to get stronger rear end stuff.-The skyline is o.k. cause the center diff will put 100% of power to rear when needed.

this is possible. theres drift wrx's set up for RWD. yes normally a rwd car would have a longitudinally mounted engine. but on one of my old cars, a 92 legend, it was FWD but with a londitudinally mounted motor for better balence. then used axles to get the power to the front wheels. incidentally, the weight distribution is 60/40.

yes, a legend still uses only 2 axles- my best way to explain it is to look @ the evo from under a lift and see the route that the drivetrain takes to the rear wheels- usually that route will take a maximum of 50% of the torque. Now double it and you will see that you will break everything- also you wouldn't want to do it w/ a 05 cause it has an acd.

That's how DSMs do it. There is a problem: There is tremendious stress transferring power solely to the RW. The driveshaft (smaller comparing to a true RWD car) or the t-case start to blow itself apart w/ greater HP numbers. Then again, the Evo probably relies heavily on its electronic gizmos than any DSMs.

Sorry to nitpick. You are confusing engine types with engine orientation. Horizontally opposed engines are the "flat', "boxer" types:

http://auto.howstuffworks.com/engine-flat.htm

The evo's engine is an inline-4. Like the majority of FWD based layouts, it is transversely mounted.

Is there a way to make the evo more RWD biased (like DCCD in STIs)? I know it can be done using adjustable differentials. Would be easier on a 05 w/ ACD. I was kinda sad to hear that the new Evo's ACD wouldnt go beyond 50/50.

Would people really want this? There is still a significant weight bias to the front end, not to mention the fact that more energy is lost sending the power to the rear wheels than the sending to the front.
