Idea for the Evo: Carbon Fibor fanatics see inside

i ran a search out of curiousity and didn't see anyone mention this.

my idea for this is i think rather original and i think feasible, maybe not since it hasn't been done.

anyway here goes.

The metal tubes for the turbo as well as the the tubing for intakes, can't that be made of out cf ?

why not? i know after being an evom mbr for over a year i know other parts of the engine compartment are available in cf. (fuse box, etc...)

i know CF is extremely strong and is extremely resistant to heat.

now i talked to RaleighEvoVIII about this on our little road trip yesterday and he said its not possible b/c it would overheat and be brittle and break, or perhaps warp b/c of the temps.

now i am thinking of CF tubes running from the intercooler, the turbo, etc...then have them connect to metal curves so that way the CF tubing wouldn't actually be bending at all.

what do you think? i know there is such a thing as reinforced CF, that should be strong enough.

anyway, input?

Doesn't carbon fiber expand under extreme temperatures?

i'm sure it would work. carbon fiber is very strong in a circular shape (a good example would be a ships mast made of CF), so the pressures and vacuums it would see would not stress the material to much. it is also heat resistant, so the heat the existing pipe see the CF could handle. i would imagine you don't see many is because of cost.

i know for my porsche there are a few venders that make carbon intake manifold$$$$$$$$. for example, a stock manifold can be had for maybe 100 dollars (used in excellent shape). the carbon manifolds run 3000+.

now i know bends in a pipe are really easy to do with carbon because it is simply wrapped around a mandrel in the given shape or bend you need. and provided you have the correct weave and expoxies, it will just as strong at the bends as the straights. so there would be no need to transition from metal to CF for bends.

so my assumption would be that it can be done, but unless you can find someone to make you the pipes for the handful of people who are willing to pay out their *** for something that gives no performance gain, you will not see CF pipes for quite some time.

are you using an autoclave to make the pipes bad evo? or are you just vacuum bagging it...? and how are you doing the joints to the intercooler and the turbo and throttle body (my guess would be with a flared end and use silicon hoses to connect it...).

i have messed around with carbon fiber some, but i was really never successful at making anything out of my own garage. the autoclave was a must IMO.

If you wanted too, you could just buy carbon fiber cloth and the resin and coat the hard pipes for the look (if that's all you're going for)

hks has the cf ti exhaust and that doesn't seem to warp at all under high temp. go for it!
