carbon fiber is not held together by plastic... it's held together by resin... which is a technicality... but significantly different.
also... they wouldn't use anything but the highest heat shielding ceramic in sapce shuttle tiles so i don't even see the relevance of that comment.
one thing that has been brought to my attention lately though, is if you wanna make an intake mani out of cf, especially one that holds boost... you have to worry about shattering, cf is very brittle, hence not too many body panels are made out of the stuff unless you're just pure hardcore.
an intake manifold doesn't need to be made out of the amount of metal that it is for the purpose of holding boost... i mean a dumb example is that a soda can holds quite a bit of pressure with just being the thickness of a soda can, tin cans can withstand a bit of pressure also.
the intake manifold has to worry about boost AND high speed debris, exploding engine parts, corrosion, thermal expansion etc.
it's true that a few of these things can be avoided with the cf, corrosion, expansion etc but in order to contain exploding stuff or withstand high speed dirt and what not... you might have to make a cf mani very thick which isn't hard or a bad thing but... it's just a consideration, makes things expensive.

BMW Dinan intakes and everything engine cover, tube related is made of Carbon Fiber without plastic structure support, but it's just CF.
It's possible and I think the company that advertise on this site with the carbon fiber ring is making CF intake pipes and few other things.
