Good one, that would be interesting since "Motor Trend headquarters" is on Wilshire Boulevard. D-OH!

The numbers you should be using for comparison sake (to the MR) are the January 2004 issue, the Motor Trend "of the year" numbers, which were run at the regular test location. I remember the acceleration numbers very well because I ran them, Chris did the handling portion of the testing so I don't have those memorized, I'll look them up once I get into the office.

I really dont see a speed differece, i friend of mine bought a wicked white MR, he owns a speed shop, i own a Weightless White one (no difference in color of you ask me) lol but they dynoed at the same horsepower but the MR had a 8 more pounds of tourqe. All i heard about the MR is that the ride is much nicer and smoother, otherwise im too happy with my 2003 to buy a 35,000 evo with a ACD and 6 speed.

2003 Evo 0-60 4.8sec
2005 Evo MR 0-60 4.3sec
2003 Evo 1/4 13.4 @ 102mph
2005 Evo MR 1/4 12.9 @ 107.6mph
You see the difference now???

Also

Motortrend tested 03 EVO 0-60 5sec and 1/4 for 13.5 @ 101mph lol
MR also has 17.6lbs less unsprung weight due to lighter BBS wheels
IMO MR is just faster... my 2cents....

The numbers im quoting came from the road tests part of the magizine thats in there every month. SO if you say why am i using them for comparion why post them back there. Those numbers have been in there since the evo came out and theres no star next to it saying *done at Ford's APG* Post real times then. Test the 03 Evo with the MR on the same track.

the MR shown in the road and track article also has smoked taillights and rear lights, US models dont have those. BUt im pretty sure the ones in japan do which i think i heard had more horsepower and were faster then the MRs in the United states. It also says the MR has a bigger Turbo???????

Shorter Final Gear!
You guys are all wrong!
I do not have time to go verify or research it yet, but according to Car & Driver's MR test on Oct issue, the MR has a short final gear. This is by far the only factor can make the MR faster than our 03-04 EVO.
I believed C&D is the only mag or source I recalled which mention this difference between the MR and other EVO.
This actually solves a lot of misteries of the MR. I remembered the Best Motoring Video tested the MR vs EVO, the MR has a lower top speed, and according to Best Motoring, they do not know why either, but they think it might be the extra downforce from the Vortex Generator. Besides, MR is heavier than regular no-sunroof EVO, the extra 5hp, aluminum roof, light wheels shouldn't make a big difference in accelerations, according to the test performed by Best Motoring Video.
If Mitsu really swapped a shorter final gear on the MR to get that performance edge, I don't think MR is that attractive anymore. Imagine, if your EVO can be 300-500 rpm higher in any speed, you are right there at the power band!
Hope someone knows the technical specs on the MR and can be able to verify this

The MR was faster than the STi's by about a second a lap and the 2003 Evo by about 2 seconds a lap. Same driver, same track, same day, so those numbers are very comparable, the MR is simply faster.
