They aren't dumb enough to give up the publicity they will get from Fast and the Furious 2, but they aren't directing it either. The last thing any of us need is more people out there trying to street race without the experience to back it. If any of you ride bikes like i do, you will know what i'm talking about with "squids".
Heres the connection, from Sport Compact Car:

"Don't expect all of the cars to come from either events. The producers of the movie met with Honda, Nissan, Ford and virtually every other OEM looking to gain production support in the form of providing vehicles and a chunk of cash. Rumors are that Honda turned them down, Ford came close, but that ultimately the company that bit was Mitsubishi. So, if the rumors are true, expect Mitsu to pony up some Evo VIIs to the production and to support the release of the film when it opens next summer with promotions."

Sure sounds to me like thinks the Evo is a dragster...

We don't know if it's going to be dragracing or maybe street racing with cornering? Just because the first one is drag raced doesn't mean the 2nd will follow.

Mitusbishi loves participating in movies. This way they could build an image here.

A plentful amount of Jackie Chan movies sponspored my
Legend of speed
Beverly hills cop somthing?? VR-4
Now f&f2, it makes sense and i hope the movie will give us reconizition like the supra. I'm from motor city and i know people will think i have a modded civic and i have to earn my reputation on the track.

RaX: I'd guess that the people at saw F&TF2 as a relatively inexpensive marketing tool to get 20 somethings into their showrooms. Most will not realize that Mitsubishi had to pay for their cars to be in the movie, and will instead take it as "hey, those Lancers *must* be cool, they were in F&TH2!!". None of the cars in F&TF were "dragsters" by any means - Jetta, S2000, Eclipse, etc. Mostly low torque FF cars. The exception was obviously the FR Supra. All about image...

Talking EVO VIII

.I have to say, I think a lot of people are missing the "point"....nobody's saying you have to buy this car...the way I see it is, I have been waiting 2 plus years for the evo 5,6,7 whatever to come stateside & I beleave it will be the most exciting car to hit the us streets in some time ! ! ! so where not going to get the acd diff..take the $2500 and go to a skip barber driving school....you will be much better off ! ! ! -just my 2 cents-

I'm just happy to be getting an Evo. I'll take out the spare tire and jacks, and rely on AAA. I'll reduce unsprung weight wherever I can, and then I'll live with it. It sucks that we get less technology and more weight than the Jspec version, but thats how we have to take it.

I wouldn't doubt that a good bit of that weight is in sound deadening material though. Almost every US magazine review I ever read of the evo7 said that the noise was almost unbearable over a long drive. I bet mitsu read these reviews and decided that was a problem for the US market. And the rest of it is probably in the bumpers and crash supports.

Maybe it would be possible to import a Jspec transfer case and ECU in a year or two when the warranty is over anyhow. I don't know shizat about the technical aspects of this, so I probably just proposed fitting an elephant into a rat's *** or something, but it was just a suggestion.

When is FNF2 slated to come out?? This may be a silly point, however I hope to have my EVO VIII before the movie appears so I don't catch the slack I do now with my '95 Talon AWD. I dragrace with a laptop in the car similar to the first movie and I'm sick of people thinking I did this just because of this. I was doing this long before that movie ever appeared and it just irks me that a bunch of punk kids come along and ruin it for the rest of us. Hopefully the higher price tag on the EVO VIII will keep those people out of the market, at least for a few years.

No not a dragster, but you know what I mean... a 1/4 mile machine with a ridiculously sized wing. There's no doubt that the Evo will do great in the 1/4 mile but we all know it wasn't designed for that.

Agreed, RaX.

I saw a civic today with a 15" high wing (the top of it was actually above the roofline!).

RaX...keep in mind SCC even said it was rumored. Of course is going to put up the money....wouldn't you if you were releasing a car like this into a market where it doesn't have any firm footing? If intended this to only be a dragster, they would be releasing it without the added weight, etc. I'd much rather have a fast car with added weight and less noise as opposed to the other.
Anyway, I'm glad we have it coming regardless of what it may or may not have. Keep in mind that there are also going to be a million aftermarket companies racing to try and come up with every possible way to squeeze just a little more HP out of it. I don't think the added weight is going to make a really huge difference. If people want to race this car, they can always strip it down to lose that "added" weight that's there.
Glad it's finally coming.....hopefully Nissan will bring the skyline over Then i'd have a really hard time deciding what to pick.

Skyline ain't fer bumps and gravel, though. A lotta folk keep comparing the evo to street racers...the only thing in its class is the STi...which, having been a very enthusiastic member of this forum for quite some time (you'll note the enthusiasm in my posts nearly ALWAYS being much longer than anyone wants, and spouting CHAPTERS of nothing), I hate to say is looking better all the time. With no AYC and no ACD, is there really an edge over the STi? God, someone please help me...I'm starting to fade into a Subaru fan again.

well, skyline is coming over in few years. the newly redesigned one, of course. (kinda looks ugly i think)

evo or sti . . . evo or sti . . . i think sti is gonna be around $32k. i hope evo is more like $27, not $29. well, i'll be in the market for a new car in about a year and i never would have thought i could aford a sports car for so cheap. anyway, it's really exciting that we're getting the evo. yeah, we're not getting all the stuff we want, but hey, it's still gonna be fast and awesome. . . i can't wait . . .

Good point about waiting for the Evo with more options. If we wait, they may say "No market." If we don't, we get screwed down the line. Damn you Mitsu....

Oh, regarding the FATF2 comment that Evo's weren't built for drag racing; neither were Honda Civics, Toyota Supras, or Mazda RX-7's. But they all got used that way. Drag racing is an American sport. Most Americans wouldn't get quite as excited at the idea of an Evo and a RX-7 drifting side-by-side around a tight mountain road (I'd kill to see it, though!)

I think your missing the point tux, but any car can be built into a dragster...believe it or not I saw a suped up omni not that long ago, lol. I've heard rumor about the skyline...and i think i've seen a pic of it and i agree it is kinda ugly. Evo may be made for snow and gravel but with the price tag rumors i've been reading in other posts I don't think i'm going to be even able to afford one, let alone take it through the outback
I've read some other posts about pricing and some of the dealers are asking for 5-10k OVER MSRP! wtf!??!?! I'll be taking another year or two to save for it and hope other options come out. I wouldn't stress about possible lack of interest...only 5000 are supposed to arrive in the U.S. It won't take long for them to sell them, and if they don't maybe it will be a nice slap in the face to them to either reduce the price a little (under STI i hope) or add the options everyone wants and they've said they are going to release....just my two cents
