What IS a normal Idle?
What IS a normal Idle?
So i've noticed today that my car is idling @ a little over 500 rpms, maybe 700 or so. and that's when it's all warmed up. even when i'm @ a stop light it drops that low. i've been reading around that i simply shouls reset my ECU..but what i wanted to know, is what is a normal idle speed? 1500? 1000? just wondering?
reset your ecu, then idle for a bit, then restart your car again.
if it's still low, check your air filter. If the air filter is still clean (white and light yellow underneath) then take it to the dealership, there's something wrong with your car.

DAMN!!
TALK ABOUT FAST REPLIES
thanks people, i'll do that tomorrow and let you guys know how things turned out. There are no mods to my car yet. The only think i could imagine is the cold weather or maybe something happened when i changed my oil the other day. but that's impossible cuz i never get that wrong hahahaha
yeah i knew it was way to low. Anyone know of any causes why it would be so low with no mods done to it?
thanks again!

Idle
Guys correct me if I'm wrong. My car at Idle is at 900 when warmed up. My 2003 was the same. So if your only Idling at 700Rpm's you can adjust your IAC screw which is located on the throtle body. Well at least it was like that on my 1994 Eclipse GSX. that would take care of the problem all together. If you turn it clockwise the idle will go down counter clockwise up.
Just trying to help you out. Let me know if this works
OPPS IAC stands for Idle Air Control (I know some of you already know this)

I think the term on the EVO is the BISS (Base Idle Speed Setting) but your correct, it can be adjusted, but let the dealer do it..
Oh, and the normal range of idle speeds on this car is 600-1200 rpm it really depends on air density and a few other factors.. Generally the car should normally idle at 950rpm.. I find if the airflow stalls on my car, the idle speed drops to 500rpm, then climbs back up as the idle solenoid tries to recalibrate (my car is modified and I know what causes it) It seems that if your fuel trims go out of range for one reason, it drops into open loop, and the BISS resets, and it hunts for an idle speed again to climb up, as its climbing it goes back into closed loop and AFR's normalize at 14.7:1
if you have a wideband on the car as this is happening you can see the pattern.. when I monitor the OBD-II port I can watch the short term fuel trims and airflow volume shift as this is happening.
Generally this shouldn't happen on a stock car, but you might want to check for a minor vacuum leak or a sticking PCV valve.. I found a vacuum leak between the Fuel pressure regulator solenoid and the FPR assembly, so when the solenoid opened, it opened a vacuum leak and the idle speed would drop..

Interesting, my car idles under 800 per my SAFCII.
I also only show 25 HZ Karmann at idle, and per Malibu normal should be about 30 HZ. I've noticed that when I'm at ~900 rpm, such as lightly holding the throttle, I will see ~30HZ karmann.
I'll check that BISS thingy and crank it up a tiny bit.
I also tapped my boost gauge between the FPR solenoid thingy, and I don't have any clamps on the teed hoses, so I could have a slight vacuum leak there.
Thanks,
FB
