If I understand it correctly, even if the timing belt snaps I don't think the pistons touch the valves, which would mean no problem. Can someone second that for me?

My desk is right next to the service department customer lounge. I've never seen or spoken with a single customer who had a timing belt failure in the 20 months I've been at this store.

Mitsubishis use interference heads. If the timing belt snaps (your supposed to change it every 60,000 miles) you will most likely bend some valves and ruin a piston or two. A new engine will most likely be needed. This isn't a "Mitsubishi problem" it is common in a lot of small high performance motors. Some Nissans and Toyotas are the same way.

I think the problem you're referring to is mainly limited to the 3.0l 6G72 V6 found on the older Diamante (pre 1997) and older Montero. As far as I am aware, this has been fixed. The current Galant, Eclipse and Montero Sport use this engine and do not have this problem (again based on my limited knowledge on this).

The 4G63 is an interference engine, which means if the timing belt goes, so will the engine. It is just one of those things you should change before the manual says, about every 40k miles.
I had to replace the engine in my galant, because the previous owner didnt have the tensioner correct and my cam jumped a few teeth. It was really my fault for not checking though.
This is not a big deal as long as you dont forget about it for 80k miles or so.

Timing belt break, engine break.. Service your car, engine not break.. Simple as that... If serviced properly and in the allotted time, the car will be very reliable... Trust me, I pretty much drive very hard all the time (it's just so much fun), but I always take care of it at the same time.. So it'll be fine...

the 6g72 engines are non-interference, so if the timing belt breaks, it will not damage the valves or pistons. the new ones like 6g74 are interference engines. the old diamante's are non-interference, and the problem were not valves hitting the piston but defective oil seals that promoted engine oil going past the valves and seals.
