I think the clutch problems are pretty much mostly on the '03s but I'm not sure. If you do 6k clutch dumps and have 300whp, you can expect that clutch to break. If you keep everything stock, you probably won't have to worry about a thing. I say probably because humans made the car, and humans make mistakes

i haev 12k on the clock with an 03 and the clutch is fine. with my power level i would expect the clutch to have gone out by now. i know that some people had ****ty clutches, but if you know how to drive the car then you will be fine.

both the evo and sti are great choices, but once you start modding you will realize the evo is the best platform. You can always get a quiet exhaust so dont worry about that. evos can push 400+whp pretty easily but you will have trouble with the STi's. Dont get me wrong, the STi is a cool car, but the USDM motor in the STi is junk in my opinion; the JDM 2.0 liter was much much bettter.

theclutch problems are based on production dates. A friend of mine is a rep for Mitsu and has a EVO MR as a promotional car. I asked him and he said some of the the early production 03s had problems, then mitsu bought a new metal-casting machine and changed the grade of metal used. Not sure if its true or not

Word. I had 40k on my stock clutch and I only replaced it because was replacing my transmission under warranty.

hey thanks alot for all the replies. i guess i'll have to do some searching to figure out how much of a power increase i can afford. 300 whp sounds like a good target for me.

my local dealer has 7 '04 evos still sitting on the lot. but i kinda want the '05 stuff. i bet i could get a killer deal for the '04's. i already got a price on a '05 at 500 over invoice..

damn. decisions decisions.

well i've made my decision. evo it is... going to have to mod right away though. the reason on my decision.. the only thing i like about the sti is the torque. and i've always been a 2 stroke kinda guy, and that what the evo feels to me, kinda like a well tuned 2 stroker...

now. all i have to do is decide between. used '03, '04. or new '04 '05- that i can't mod for a while... damn the decisions don't stop.

there are like zero used evos around minneapolis right now. i should just say f$%^ it and go buy a new one. the wife would be pissed. then order up like 3k worth of mods...

i dislike the sti sound, it sounds like a souped up volkswagen beetle. not apealing. the evo with a full 3" exhaust with cat delete sounds wonderful especially on with a manifold and more boost and intake tube and intercooler pipes and a engine managment system and a bigger turbo and a stroker kit and head work w/ beefed valve train and nitrous . . . oh sorry i was dreaming of my car, happens sometimes. but yeah the evo sounds tons better than a fixed up bug, er i mean sti

Smile

um a 2 stroke engine makes more horse power and torque than a 4 stroke dude. the just are really dirty engines and are kinda rough on parts, fyi
