doesn't the sti or wrx for that matter come with 3 cats? think about what mods sti owners probably first do to free up hp. in the process of removing a cat or the cats. you gain more decibals if you know what i mean.

i know 2 strokes and 4 strokes quite well. been racing both for ever..
small turbo charged engines do have somewhat of a 2 stroke feel to them. kinda weak bottom end. nice midrange surge then a good top end. that's the first thing i thought of when driving a modded evo.
damn i'm getting off topic on my own thread..
bug
that lil lag from bottem to mid range is because the evo doesnt really make much boost until approx. 2500 rpms and the fact that a 2.0l w/o boost is a snail. a set of cams and a lil more boost with fix it

If I were looking at getting another Evo tomorrow, I'd opt to buy a new '05. The primary reasons for an '05 are the revised turbo and lightened roof. The primpary reason for buying a new Evo over a used one would be the chance to break it iin myself, and the knowledge that all of the required maintenance has been done correctly from mile 1.
you have no excuse driving below 3000 rpm anyway, so don't worry about the low end lack of power. The steering and suspension on this car are unreal, and it's easier to mod a motor for power (especially the truly classic 4G63) than to tweak the suspension balance, and you're stuck with the steering.
What convinced me was when long-time WRX tuner Shiv Pathak bought himself an evo. That says a little something I think.
Sounds like you've made your choice anyway though.

it's about time to get your ***** back & buy whatever you want when YOU decide, not her & yes i'm married so i do run things that's why i got 2 evos. also for the record the APS turbo exhaust for the sti is as quiet as stock.
