Optimal Shift Points

If one had a Dyno sheet and the gear ratios, it would seem possible to calculate the optimum rpm range to run each gear for best average torque/HP. Does anyone know the math to this, or do we just go by the seat of our pants? Mine seems to stop pulling around 6000rpm.

Mine too at about the same rpm range, first you must consider what mods you have, my car is bone stock...

In my VR4, I improved from about 5500 to more than 7000rpm with a bunch of mods added to the engine...

Its fairly straightforward if you have a dynograph of your power output.. Figure out what RPM each shift drops and figure out where you have the most HP in that range..

Is it simply HP or does where you are on the Torque curve play as well?

You accelerate with torque, not horsepower, and the gear ratios are involved. I've seen an exhaustive review of this several times; you need the gear ratios (actually the ratio of one gear to the next) and the torque curves; you want to shift when the torque value in the gear you're in drops to the torque value in the gear you're going to. I am pretty sure the formula I read was on this forum; have you searched for it?

You're right, It's all about torque. Found a long post on the subject that seems to make sense. No formulas but I think I can figure it out from what was there. Seems like you have to not only use the torque but also factor in the mechanical advantage of each gear. So therefore. particularly in low gears, the torque would have to drop off badly before there would be any advantage to shifting. After all 2.98 in first vs 1.95 to second is a 35% advantage, so the torque would have to be down by that much over what it would be if the shift took place to make it worthwhile. Cool stuff.

dude shift when the needle is about to hit seven. if you ride 1st gear out to seven from a launch you will hit like 7400rpms. even if you stop making power before seven if you shift early the next gear could be not high enough
