STi > MR

___________Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution MR_________ Subaru Impreza WRX STi
street start, 5-50 mph, dry pavement 5.0 _______________4.7
street start, 5-50 mph, split-traction surfaces 5.4 _________4.7
roadholding 300-ft skidpad, g 0.92_____________________ 0.90
increasing slalom*, mph 60.9 _________________________60.4
decreasing slalom*, mph 57.2 ________________________59.4
lap time, sec/mph 75.20/81.4 _________________________75.05/81.5
autocross time, sec 52.8 _______________________________52.8

The Mitsu's neutral handling, however, was only able to overcome the Subaru's gutsy motor at one track. And we think some subtle chassis tuning on the STi would likely make it quicker everywhere. The tuning may be something as easy as an air-pressure adjustment. But that's tough to say without testing, so maybe we'll have to borrow these cars again and head back to the track.

Subtle engine changes on an Evo can even more easily quickly overcome the STi's power, which doesn't even exist anyways!

Refer to the Motortrend article where the Evo put 239whp down, to the STi's 233whp.

And if they're making changes to the STi to improve the handling, what do you think happens when they make the SAME changes to the Evo?

Good luck Subbie fans!

With a limited amount of money.. I think you could defintly make the evo faster than the sti. It just seems like parts and such would cost more for a box motor than a normal DOHC setup.

All they said was change the tire pressure not mod.

I wouldn't mind seeing the ESX 425hp STi vs FQ400 but FQ400 not available in US

Good article. But I'm surprised C&D didn't debate upon which would be easier-getting the Evo's engine to compete/surpass the STi's? Or tuning the STi's handling to match/surpass the Evo?

I think most would agree that it would be easier to start out with superior handling and add power to the engine.

It's even more surprising since C&D has worked so closely with Vishnu at their Supercar Challenge and have seen what a modded 4g63 can do.

Either way, hopefully they will have more time to evaluate the 2 cars.

Those articles werent the reason I purchased my evo... i drove both cars and made my own decision. I went with what I felt more comfortable with, and the evo was it

I really could care less with car the mags say is better. I know what is tried and true and the evo will alway come out as the victor in my book

Because once you start talking about mods or $ after stock, anything can be made to beat anything it is pointless.

A little $200 reflash from Al or TurboTrix would easily take care of any power "advantage" the STi has. Hands down the Evo is a better foundation. The powertrain mops the floor with the 2.5L boxer, the chassis and suspension sophistication in the Evo overrides the STi. They went the easy route for USDM, bigger is easier but not always better.

Yep. You have to start with stock versus stock or the comparisons become useless. You can modify anything.

evo wins in main article doing a STOCK vs STOCK comparo. nasti has the biggest inferiority complex of any STi owner i've ever seen.
