u know, this was sorta the bases of what I was thinking as well, except for all the words that I don't understand well.

the wave frequency is disturbed and the build up of air inside the air box isn't translated to MAF if you have an open element, which builds up air later than the stock air box.

that combine with the fact that the wave length is changed due to the straight pipe designs that doesn't give any fins inside the air tube or filters turbulance like the stock air box does.

this is why the aftermarket intake translates into lean spots, because of the turbulant air type that doesn't allow travel back and forth inside the intake tube, which is critical for the air to dispense at the right time to the turbo.

Other intake designs compensate by having a ballooned tube design, where it does somewhat stores and filters the air, but it should happen pre intake tube.

This is why the the MAF sensor output is a somewhat sinusoidal waveform.

That said, the bluff body must be allowed to have laminar flow build up on it, so it won't work in turbulent airflow, and I think the common conception is that most aftermarket open intakes have some degree of turbulence that that prevents the alternating build up of laminar flow on the bluff body, which would either cause the form to A) be corrupted, or B) effect the natural frequency the system oscillates at for a given flow rate.

My theory is that if an aftermarket open filter type elements does indeed have some sort of turbulence that corrupts the signal, that would be obvious on any plot from a digital oscillosope from the MAF. Missing peaks on the waveform, etc.. As far as affecting the natural frequency, you think you would be able to determine if that was the case from looking at a wide band A/F meter, and seeing if the open filter element made a big difference to A/F ratio.

Has anyone done any testing? As far as I know the open filter debate is still, well, open.

I wouldn't say that whatsoever. My car has much more hp than it did when i was stock. I have a turboback with cams and i'm tuning soon. But in no way would i say all that stuff was a waste of time....

Back to matt55's reply...I bought my evo used and whoever had it before my didnt know how to drive a standard. I buy it a month ago I only got to drive it for about 3 days before the transfercase messes up on me and the dealer was giving me the story about the " this may not be covered by warranty " But ends up the transfer case was out and sumthin was wrong with the ring and pinion. But luckily the dealer called me 2 days ago and said it IS covered by warranty.

Basically you have a computer that controls your engine. The ECU(brain). There are ton's of company's that can tune your ECU to the mods you get done. This will give you optimum power.

Buy some and do it your self , Thats the only way you can get a good nights sleep . Lancershops has a good deal on it http://www.lancershop.com/customer/p...&cat=15&page=1 the dealer put Pennzoil Syncromesh(that I asked them to put in the transmison) in my T-case . It lasted less than 200 miles

Could 2 people who know how to tune, could 1 do a way better job? Or is it basically if you know how to do it then you know how?
