Regarding the gasket ( i assume u mean head gasket) and conrod bolts, i asked the guy i bought my cams from the exact same question. He told me that u only need a new head gasket when ur rebuilding ur motor. Otherwise u have to completely rid the head off, which is a huge PITA. He claimed it would take like 8-10 hours (a slight exaggeration) just to do that. As from conrod bolts, same deal......its not worth it unless ur doing a complete teardown and rebuild. Just do the headstuds and u should be fine. He even said that new valve springs/retainers aren't necessary unless u plan on revving past 8,000 RPM.

That and lining up the cam gears after the install are really the only hard part. Breaking that bolt loose is juist a little scary since you can bend a valve if you slip. I've still broken it loose by myself though.

Ans I agree with some of the other guys. This is not a 3 hour job for an experienced mechanic.

What about valve cover gasket? Well figure this... I would have to drive 45min to the shop. The engine would be a bit hot. So that may be the reason he wants it all weekend. Also don't they tell you to do the studs when the engine is not warm. Install them heat cycle them then test to see if they are still at the same tq specs?

no extra time, the stock cam gears come off anyway along with the cams. So instead of putting the stock ones back on just have them throw the adjustable ones on. They shouldnt charge you any extra for the cam gear installation if you are getting the cams installed along with the gears.

I could see a shop adding about 1/2 an hour for that. I zip tie the gears and they'd have to cut those and be sure that the new ones were lined up right.

If you are worried about lining up the cam gears, just zip tie them to the belt and its a p[iece of cake, I feel sorry for people who pay more than 150 for this job....

Yes unless you are paying 150 hr for labor...just offer 150, its a fair deal for a shop, now 125 for a backyard job is about right....Not trying to be hard, but 300 is ridiculous, I mean a clutch job is a little over 400 and thats 10x as much work..
