First of all, who are you to demand a price on labor if you're not a tech? Anyone that is a real tech and has real tools that have cost him thousands and thousands of dollars would not even think of charging $150. My torque wrench alone costs $350, 1/4 inch air ratchet $250, wrenches $250, impact 3/8" gun $280. This is not even considering how much my years of experience are worth. You are the type of people that **** me off, although everyone in my area (NYC) respects me and my prices I still have one of these guys that "offer" me a price to work on their car It takes me 1 hour and 15 minutes to do the cams (fully bled lifters and primed oil pump) and another 30-45 minutes to do the headstuds. I get $235 for the cams and for the heastuds and I have a long list of people waiting for my work. Everyone must understand that just because the job takes lets say 2 hours it does not mean that you get to charge only 2 hours. You pay regardless if it takes 2 hours or 4 hours. Jeez, it takes me 2 1/2 hours to do the clutch on the Evo and I get $450 (with fluids) , I suppose you expext me to charge no more than $50 an hour= $125, are you nuts

The man has a point.....i have 2 buddies who r techs, one for ford and the other at MB, and im sure they would laugh at anyone who demanded an exact price for labor. I think $235 seems pretty fair for cams and headstuds. I have yet to call AMS and ask for a quote on labor, and i hope it will be around that price as well. Otherwise, i might just have to do the install myself!

Amen!

I know on these boards superz has one hell of a reputation for his work.
Being a former A tech I agree with what he is saying 100%

You can have cams installed without replacing other parts, right? I know replacing the timing belt and the tensioner and everything is a good idea, but not necessarily needed, right? I'm going with a straight 264 setup for now, until I decide to get a bigger turbo.

First of all, I appreciate you talking like you know me...for all you know I AM a TECH! I realize you dont get charged for the time it takes, even I wouldnt do that....but I am still sticking with anything over 200 is ridiculous...hell there are several people that will do them for freeor even 125, but whatever floats your boat...As for your expensive tools, I know the feeling, but its part of the deal in any profession.....You may be a great mechanic, but seem to be missing some business management skills...I am out of this thread as my cams are already installed.....Happy Tuning to all!!

Hitman...take the guy up on the free as long as you show up with beer offer...thats hard to beat, not to mention the only way to learn your car is to help out which most techs wont aloow( not here!!)

I need arp head stud done and shops are charging 150, 170, etc. If you move to suburbs or close to chicago let me know. I'll bring you two case and some smoke if you need it.

You guys are so lucky. The shops here in Hawaii must be incompetent or something. I've had 3 shops (one was the dealer) quote me 500 for a cam install because they don't know about using the tensioner tool and they were gonna remove the whole belt. And 4 shops quoted me 900 for a clutch install.

heh, head studs.. You guys should at least be able to do those without extensive tooling..

Borrow a torque wrench from your nearest auto parts store, or friend, sockets, extension and ratchet, and go to town, one by one (take one out, put one it) starting from the inside out.

Edit: I did the studs in my talon in about 30 minutes, with one beer break.
