Warrenty ?

Whats up guys. New to the Awesome world of the evo. I recently bought a used evo with 10,000 miles. Before i bought the car i had it checked and called Mitsu, they ran the VIN and said the acr was safe to buy. Now after driving it alittle, I'm noticing a slight Grind between 4th and 5th! ah! This does not occur everytime but seems when im on it alittle more it does. Maybe a syncro? The car has a turbo timer, ACT clutch, and boost gauge. Will any of those mods keep them from covering the warrenty on the transmission, should i bring back to stock. I have the original clutch from past owner. Or my other considered option was to send the thing to sheperd and have it redone. But would rather save the money for now. Your thoughts anyone please?

Hey, I've heard about this problem happening many a time before on Evos between 4th and 5th. Just can't remember if it's with an aftermarket clutch or not. Maybe a search on a similar thread might help. Good luck!!

From what I have heard any mods will void the warrenty. To be safe I would put the stock clutch back in before you take it in. My car does the same thing when I am tached up more coming out of fourth and going into fifth. I just don't slam fifth unless I really need to make the point to some one on the highway and I don't have any problems with it. I also have heard horror stories of people taking the car in to have that same problem fixed and the grinding coming right back a month later but worse than before. In a few cases I have even heard of worse problems after Mistu "fixes" the grind like whole tranny needing rebuilt. I would say if you can live with it let it go. But you are right it is the syncro causing the problem.

The mods that you have shouldn't void your warranty. Despite what people say, I know for sure the clutch doesn't as it is a wear item like tires and turbo timer and gauges if install correctly shouldn't be a problem. The grinding is probably because your 4-5th gear sychro is shot. Try to have a Mitsu dealer fix it, if not I would get the tranny upgraded through TRE or Sheppard racing ...

Alot of people had the same problem, and its sort of a recall from what I have heard, the 5th gear synchro. I know for a fact that my car had it done right before I bought it( used car dealer brought it in for 15,000 miles service), and the dealer did it on their own, without the problem even existing.

Its a TSB. they wont call you but if you take it in, have them check the new TSB's that problem is in there. However they could tell you the clutch caused it. Sorry thats just the way some dealerships are.

My '03 Evo is actually at San Rafael Mitsubishi dealer as we type getting this exact issue fixed. This is under warranty... as for mods, I have a turbo timer and short shifter and they took my car with no problems. The only issue is that it may take them two weeks to get me the car back... doh!

Other dealers around the bay area that I called were not so helpful and actually quite rude... Never hurts to call the dealerships anonymously and see what they have to say...

Hey, register at www.evo-ny.com
I'm sure someone there can help you find a mod-friendly dealer. The 03 Evos are known to have problems with 5th gear grinding and the synchro should be replaced under warranty.
