? for Hawaii residents

i'll be heading over to Hawaii ( SCHOFIELD BARRACKS ) probably early November.

i want to ship my car there, however I was wondering how strict they are about modified cars, specifically for emmissions and such. i also hear that it's really salty over there. Any problems with the undercarraige of cars corroding?

thanks

there's no required emmisions. Modified cars would need recon stickers which would be basically for dropped cars, and body kits.

http://www.forumshawaii.net/

look under "Ticket & Recon advice" thread

this will give you everything you need to know about recon.

For undercarriage corrision, I haven't had problems or heard from my friends that do.

hello, i am from hawaii.. and let me tell you a little something about recon. 1, it's a pain in the *** and costs money.. and 2 it's retarded. Any modified car, ie drop, exhaust, gauges, intake, etc has to have a recon sticker.. it looks somewhat like a saftey check sticker but modified a little. If you DONT have one, you WILL get pulled over and ticketed for EVERY individual mod that you dont have recon for.

I've been away from hawaii for college for about 5 months and dont think the law has changed. Last i checked, it is almost impossible to have recon on a turbo swapped car. If you want to ship your car down to hawaii and it's modified.. my suggestion is to just drive it without recon. there is a chance that you dont get hasseled.. but there also is a chance that you'll get tickets every day.
Personally, i'd expect the later, cops in hawaii are total asses.. if your car looks like a "race car" it becomes a target.. their goal is to make a reason to pull it over.

anyway, thats MO

well pretty much what slw evo said, however they seem to be less strict about it with our cars vice all the hondas and what not. i have alot of mods done and ive been pulled over a few times and not gotten any tickets for recon. Just don 't drive down in wiakiki(sp) They put all the rookies down there and that is where id say 90% of all the recon tickets are issued. i live by trippler hospital and pass cops on a regular basis and don't get hasseled. but if you do get ticketed just go to recon and you won't have any problems. oh and make sure you look us up when you get out here...we quite a few military and non military evo's out here with alot of good help. take care.

Sometimes, the way you drive, speaks as loud as the way your car looks. If you're gonna be here a while, go through the hassle and get the recon. If, not, just try to avoid those "hot spots" like Waikiki or maybe Honolulu (yeah right ).

Evos arent as seen as much on the roads as the STis, so be aware of that. Some cops are naive that they'll pull you over because you're driving a car they haven't seen before with a rather large wing (I've seen it done before). Other than that... enjoy your stay...

I got pulled over a bunch of times when my car was totally stock. Cops told me to get recon. When I went to recon they told me car was illegal from . Ride height was to low and it wasn't even dropped. Anyway if you get a exhaust or drop or wheels get recon if you can swing it because once you get a sticker the cops leave you alone. Funny how they don't care about emissions or how loud your exhaust is but only your drop.

LED,

My first suggestion to you would be, don't get frustrated. Because I can guarentee you, you won't pass on your first attempt. You'll probably have to go back three times before they'll pass you. It's a little game they play with everyone.

They won't tell you everything that's wrong with your car. Just a couple things and when you get that taken care of and come back then they'll tell you what else isn't right. LOL

Anyway you're going to have to get an alignment spec sheet no older than 30 days. And everything has to be within OEM specs. At least on paper it has to LOOK like everything is within spec.

Next you'll have to get a notorized affidavit for your exhaust. You can get one from a couple speed shops or exhaust outlets.

Make sure your headlights center is atleast 21" from the ground. And the bottom of the front plate is atleast 12" from the ground. This is not possible because even at the stock ride height it's below 12". So to get around this what you do is mount the plate so that the bottom holes of the plate mount to the 2 upper holes of the mounting frame. It looks stupid but, you'll pass this way. Then you can mount the plate back in the normal fashion.

Aftermarket wheels cannot be larger than a plus 2 upgrade. Who's gonna put 20"s on their evo.

Tint no darker than 35%.

You'll have to register your vehicle, get a safety inspection and "no fault" insurance before you go to recon. And this is where it gets rediculous.

In order to register your car, you need insurance. Not a problem. You need to have a safety inspection. But wait you can't get a safety inspection because your car doesn't have a registration. Then throw in recon which you can't get without the safety check, and vice versa you're really gonna have a blast getting all of that taken care of.

Good Luck
But like I said try not to get too frustrated because it will be worth the hassle in the end, so that you don't get hassled by the cops.
