ok I've almost run out of thisng to do to my EVO that don't void the warranty so i'm thinking about some engine dressup stuff. I want to remove my cam gear cover so ya can see the gears. i also wanna get a set of factory cam gears and powdercoat them red to match the valve cover.

My questions: will running without the cam gear cover cause any problems? will powdercoating the gears make the paint stay or will the heat remove the paint? Has anyone done this or thought about and resurched it?

Running without the cover shouldn't cause any problems as long as nothing gets caught in there... As for powdercoating the gears, I'm not sure, sorry...

well if you run without that cam gear cover, and little dirt or rocks that gets in between the belt and gears, it will throw off your timing

 

Not a good idea! If something gets caught in there you could be kissing your engine good-bye ...

 

I've been running without a gear cover for about 1 month because I haven't taken the time to modify my cover to fit my new gears. No problems, but to be honest I'd rather it be covered and I'm kind of nervous about something getting in there:

 

the only way it will throw off timing is if the rock is big enough to throw a tooth.
all that crap between the gears and belt will definitely be abrasive though. meaning
you'll get more belt wear so you'll want to keep an eye on it occasionally(which is easier
because the cover is off ) you REALLY don't want the belt to break.

the only thing to watch for with powdercoating is that it's thick. you want to protect
the inner part that slides on the camshaft because the tollerances are so tight i don't
think you would be able to get the gears back on if there is that extra layer of coating
in there.

 

Why do you want to take it off just to powder coat. I think you're better off just buying a set of adjustable cam gears but that's just me.

You can always cut the cover to show the gears only. Moon shaped.

It would get dirty, and powdercoating your cam gears might void your warrenty...

 

Ive been running mine open for about a month also . im pretty **** about keeping it clean ..just gotta make sure the powersteeing line doesnt get too close to the gears..!

 

I would just get cam gears and cut the cam gear cover so it shows the cam gears

 

There was a thread on here about someone whose gears cut his power steering pump hose, and the replacement was several hundred dollars. Heed the warnings of others and make sure to secure it away from the gears if you run without the cover. Remember that the engine moves when running, and make sure the two can't get together!

 

thanks for all your input..after reading this I think i'll just leave the cover and stock gears on. After all teh work i've done to resurch everything i've done and ensure it doesn't void my warranty, i'd hate to mess it up now...
