Power Shifting Question

How many of you powershift while drag racing? Is it harmful to the transmission? How much time does it take off your 1/4 mile? Thanks!

i dont do it , but its

Good: It allows you to accelerate faster because your are keeping the revs up. It also makes my shifts much faster.

Bad: It's hard on the transmission, clutch, and driveline.

To powershift:
Floor the throttle and leave it down, even when you push your clutch in to change gears - keep the gas down to the floor. Of course, this also implies you better not miss a gear and your shifts need to be fast.

I don't powershift, but I know how. It really tears up the syncros, as I found out in my DSMs. It's great in that it keeps you at full boost through the entire run, and it can shave off a few tenths maybe, but I don't think it's worth the damage, unless it's done only sparingly. Also, I find it much easier to mis-shift when attempting it.

the reason why i asked is because i saw a video of a guy losing almost a second off his 1/4 mile because of powershifting

Good move, a 2000$ tranny is totally worth one whole second in your 1/4 mile time! Imagine how awe-struck your internet friends will be!

What is the definition of "Power shifting"?

I think most people here are calling "power shifting" when you don't use the clutch at all?

What is it called when you keep your foot to the floor but still use your clutch to shift?

You can still stay on boost by keeping your foot on the gas, but using the clutch.... it seems like it would save a fair amount in the Qtr.... 3 shifts and maybe .1-.2 each time.... plus you really don't **** up your transmission and clutch nearly as much.

I'm actually referring to your method, but I think it's called No-Lift-To-Shift (NLTS). This is really bad even with an NLTS ECU mod that keeps your drops your rpm to 5500 between shifts. Without the NLTS mod, your RPMS spike through the roof, especially if you shift at 7500 or more. Both are harmful

The method that's even WORSE is doing this without using the clutch at all (real powershifting). That is the worst for the tranny, but the fastest potentially.

Your engine will only rev to the rev limiter even with your foot to the floor between shifts.....which is roughly 7600rpm on a stock Evo.......

I have found it fairly hard to get the car in gear for whatever reason, so I just blip the throttle mid shift to keep the boost up. I have not gone to the dragstrip recently to see if that works vs just lifting like I did at the strip (13.4@102mph with lifting).
