A special racing and modifying warranty?
What if Mitsubishi offered a special racing and modifying warranty? This warranty would cover EVOs that are raced and modified (to a certain extent). Would you guys be willing to pay extra for such a warranty? How much extra would you be willing to pay and please be realistic? Remember Mitsubishi would have to see a cost benefit for such a warranty. How would such a warranty help? Would it even be worth it?
Yeah Mitsubishi would have to come to a compromise. I would like to see a special warranty ranging from $3,000 to $5,000 extra. Most people only spend that much on modifying there EVOs anyways. If Mitsubishi did such a warranty, it would really shine a better light on them, like maybe they do care about their customers. I mean it's plain and simple that the EVO has got to be one of the most modified cars on sell today. Pretty much every EVO has some kind of modification, Mitsubishi should not ignore this, and should try to play off this. Companies like Honda, GMC, and Toyota are doing this already.
Two problems with such a warranty, firstly it makes the assumption that such a warranty could be profitable in covering lightly modified cars driven aggressively by "good intentioned" drivers. Problem is in reality people now go out, launch the car off the rev limiter and bring it in to the dealership after something goes, sometimes getting it covered. With a race warranty I see people having no need for restraint and parts are not cheap for this car. A guaranteed loss for Mitsubishi without a doubt.
Secondly part of Mitsubishi's justification for not covering such race related issues is that the car was designed for street use, as the stock clutch and overly rich fuel maps suggest. THe problem with modifications which either add power or durability to a certain component is that they usually result in more stress on others, i.e. an upgraded clutch with greater clamp force used in line with our tcase brings a higher chance of potentially damaging other components as the stock clutch is the "give" in the system.
Good idea though if all drivers under it were well intentioned and took care of their cars, thats not necessarily the whole truth though. However, I do think Mitsubishi should cover lightly modified cars (stock longblock and turbo) on a case by case basis.
