I agree. But, to chime in, I've done top speed pulls at VIR and got certified about 181, 182, and have ran with my buddy's GSXR-1000 with a speedo to 220 and I was perfectly even at about 184, 185. So 163 is not the highest by any means. Red-line limited, and reflash moves that up. Just need the ponies to get up there. And, at 181, 182, I wasn't even bouncing it off the limiter, just wouldn't pull anymore...

remember that indicated speed on the speedometer means nothing. It's calibrated for a certian tire diameter (which will change with inflation and wear) and only really accurate upto about 100mph. I know many speedometers tend to be optimistic (read high) by a couple of %.

Exactly, speedometers are notoriously innacurate, especially at speed. A GPS or radar/laser is required for truly accurate top speed runs. Top speed runs should only be done on a closed course with proper safety equipment.

Someone needs to go make a deal with the cops and borrow their laser/radar gun to check. Speedometers are kinda inaccurate at those speeds, especially if you have different rims and tires.

edit: dam, you beat me to it. I use my GPS to monitor my speed too. I get up around 75 on the speedometer, and it shows 72 on my GPS. (locked onto 7 or 8 satellites with NMEA 2.0 or above) I have different rims and tires than I did stock. As I go faster, the speedometer is more and more off.

+1 funniest burn on an STI i have heard. Plus everyone saying speedos are wrong are right, and it doesnt even have to be that you changed anything. Your wheels may be spinning that fast but they will start to slip. No tire can grip all the way up unless you are like TOp Fuel or something.

Have you tested this theory of roasting tires at or near top speed? There is barely enough HP to fight the drag let along loose traction unless your lifting off the ground due to bad Aero. No our cars are nothing like Top fuel dragsters besides that they have 4 wheels and an engine.
