Just realized something about the ecu swaps..
If and when we decide to upgrade our ecu (pcm) we will have to get it through
themselves. There is no way to swap a computer in through anyone else for the reason that the key-codes for the engine immobilizer can only be installed by a dealer. They are the only ones with the correct diagnostic computers that can upload the old ecu info and then re-install it in the upgrade ecu. Just thought I'd mention it

Aftermarket ECU's for the Type R's were done without the Immobilisor programming.
So guess is that chances are, The aftermarket ECU's for the Evo will be the same way.....

You can override the key-chip feature by swaping out the ecu, but I wouldn't do so. Any piggyback would work just fine. Some cars will not accept an ecu if the previous ecu was not uploaded to a diagnostic tool (only owned by dealerships) and then downloaded to the new one. Some factory ecu are vin # coded to work only with that car. We'll just have to wait and see how these cars are set up

If warranty is not a concern, does this mean that a Gems or Autronic ECU can be fitted, but only with Dealer assitance?

From another post I made long ago and far away.....
Diagram as I can not get this picture to diplay here.
IMMOBILIZER SYSTEM from the Evo VI tech manual (I believe it is the same for the VII)
"
The immobilizer system is optionally available.
The immobilizer system consists of the ignition key,
the antenna, the immobilizer-ECU, and the engine-
ECU. The ignition key has a built-in transponder
as the oscillator. The antenna is installed on the
steering lock key cylinder. The system prevents the
engine from being started deviously to protect the
vehicle from theft. The operation is as follows.
1. When the ignition switch is turned on, immobilizer-
ECU supplies power to the transponder inside
the ignition key via the antenna.
2. The energized transponder outputs an ID code
to the immobilizer-ECU via the antenna.
3. The immobilizer-ECU compares the input ID
code with the registered ID code. If they are
the same, the immobilizer-ECU sends a starting
permission signal to the engine-ECU. If they
are not the same or if the ID code input cannot
be received, the immobilizer-ECU sends a starting
prohibition signal to the engine-ECU.
As mentioned above, only the ID code which
is specific to each ignition key permits the engine
to start. Therefore, the engine can never be
started by means of a forged key or by connecting
the ignition wiring directly. The system is
significantly safe and reliable against theft. In
addition, the driver has only to turn the ignition
switch to the ON position to activate the immobilizer
system. If the ignition key is lost or another
ignition key is added, the ID code can be registered
or erased by using the MUT-II
"
So although GEMS does not know about the system. It is not a requirement for rally cars by any means. It may work since the information I found describes it as an system external to the ECU. It all depenends on the starting permission signal. If it is just an eletrical signal than I think it may work. If it actually sending a code in some digital format than it will not work. I am sending this information to GEMS also.
Does anyone have the Evo VII ECU pin out?
Erik
Damn, I was smart back then. On the Evo VII it is still separated so I think the Evo VIII would be as well. I have an Alpine alarm that I will install in my car anyway. The Evo VII ECU looks like the same thing. Courtesy of Mike Welch over at RRE here is the ECU pinout . Looks like pin 51 is the enabling line. I was never able to find if it is just a voltage or some signal code
