Clunking noise when shifting hard??

Just got my 05' Evo VIII, and just got her over the 1000 mile break-in mark. Changed the oil and she's good to go.

When I'm accelerating quickly, there is a fairly loud clunking noise that comes from the rear of the car as the new gear kicks in. This usually happens when I lift the clutch pretty aggressively either from 2nd to 3rd, or 3rd to 4th. Is this just the Differential gears meshing and kicking in, and should I be at all worried about it. Or is this normal behaviour for this car??

Thanks,
Nick

don't drop your clutch so hard, i found that if you leave a little on the throttle it will reduce the noise (if your hearing the same noise i heard)

It's the three piece driveline clunking under the car.

I get that when I make a really hard 1-2 snapshift. I don't like it, but it's the rear diff engaging. I would suggest not recreating it often if you can help it. I only shift that hard at the track so as to minimize any potential damage. I've only heard it ONCE on the 2-3 shift, and that was when I ran 12.1 with the most horsepower I've ever had while on 116oct and with the boost cranked. It was a really fast, really hard shift, but only made a slight clunk. I have never heard it on the 3-4, and I powershift that one, so I'm surprised you're hearing it out on the street.

I hear it everytime when I shift at WOT. I don't think it'll harm anything with a stock evo. It's just the rear diff locking (limited slip).

i used to power shift with my hondas all the time. so the first time i power shift with the evo, i heard the clunk noise and i knew that means the evo doesn't like to be power shift, so i never did it again. it was only from 1st to 2nd gear.

OK ... so it sounds like maybe I was being a little too harsh on the tranny then huh?? I will try to let up on er a little more gently and see what happens. Just to clarify, it does happen the most from 1-2 and 2-3 ... not so much from 3-4 as my previous post stated.

Trap speed is a pretty good estimate.
